Juniors Match Reports

Under 14s

On Thursday evening we made our debut in in the North Kent under 14 cup away at Hayes CC in a T20 match. In a dazzling display of stroke play including reverse sweeps and ramp shots our batsmen took Hayes’ bowling attack apart hammering 180 for the loss of only 3 wickets in our 20 overs. Will Gurney-Champion top scored with 50 retired, and Tom Harvey hit 40 before holing out near the close. When the rain started Hayes were well behind the run rate giving us the victory.

On Friday evening we played our first match of the season in the NEC Surrey under 14 league against one of the strongest teams Cheam, and in an exciting T20 match won by just 3 runs in virtual darkness.

This year our under 14s are playing a “year up” in the North Kent under 15 league. Our opponents Dartfordians posted 129 for 7 off their 24 overs. In response we were in deep trouble at 53 for 5. However, we recovered, and our last wicket pair took us over the line with only 3 balls to spare. In form batsman Will Gurney-Champion clocked up his second half century of the weekend with 62 not out.

U13 girls vs Reigate Priory – Saturday 30th April

On this cool windy April day, Dulwich girls played their first competitive hard ball match in the Lady Taverners u13 cup against a strong Reigate Priory team. With only Eleanor and Nancy having any hardball match experience, it was a young team with Soraya, Katherine, Tabitha, Sasha and Sienna stepping up from U11 and Lara playing her first ever match.

Dulwich won the toss and inserted Reigate, who got off to a strong start putting on 47 for the first wicket before Soraya made the first breakthrough. Reigate's star players Eva and a ten year old Lucy proceeded to accumulate bringing the score close to the hundred before Lara bowled Eva for a well crafted 23. Eleanor bowling uphill and into the strong wind (5-0-18-1) and Nancy (5-0-16-0) then applied the brakes with Reigate finishing eventually on a good 111-4 after 20 overs.

Sasha and Tabitha opened the batting but quickly fell to skillful bowling by Eva and Lucy. Eleanor and Nancy then took the score to 28 in the sixth over before Lucy bowling with good pace and accuracy took an all bowled hat trick to reduce Dulwich to 28-5. Eleanor then took charge helping Lara get used to the conditions, rotating the strike and driving strongly. Despite some good swing bowling by Reigate's bowlers, particularly Chloe, Lara and Eleanor played sensibly with Eleanor in particular putting away the bad ball.

Reigate brought back Eva and Lucy to try to finish the match off but by this stage the Dulwich girls were in and ahead of the run rate. Eleanor then took 8 off Eva's final over to put the result beyond doubt, with Lara scoring the winning run in the 17th over, the girls having put on an unbeaten 84. Eleanor finished with a run a ball 46 not out with Lara on 22.
