Sat 19 Jul – 1st XI v Walton-on-Thames

DULWICH 72 (34.2) lost to WALTON-ON-THAMES 74-4 (11.4) by 6 wickets

A depleted Dulwich side were thoroughly outplayed in their Ryman Surrey Championship Division 2 match at Walton-on-Thames, and went down to defeat by 6 wickets.

With six of the previous week’s side unavailable, Dulwich gave first team debuts to Freddie Bucknell, John Morris and Kieran Reeves and a second appearance to Dan Peters, and brought back Arun Mahey, who hadn’t played for two years. Owing to the late arrival of six of the players Dulwich were forced to concede the toss and were put in to bat on a difficult pitch, and lost their first wicket to the second ball of the match. Salaar Waqar, pressed into service as a makeshift opener, made light of the conditions and had advanced to 20 when he was undone by a ball that stopped on him and lobbed back to the bowler. Ed Stolle batted positively until being run out for 11, but Bucknell, with 10, was the only other batsman to make double figures as Dulwich were bowled out for 72. Former Surrey left arm spinner Mark Bainbridge started with six consecutive maidens and finished with three wickets for two runs off nine overs, while opening bowler James Newell took 4-28. Ed Savill once again offered stout resistance, facing 44 balls before being last man out for 3.

The Walton openers started aggressively against Naeem Iqbal and Bucknell, putting 26 on the board in the first four overs. Reeves picked up a wicket in his first over thanks to a brilliant diving catch by Iqbal at point, but only Waqar, with 1-11 off 3.4 overs, was able to command respect. The Mahey brothers bowled one expensive over each, though they both managed to pick up a wicket in it. Walton reached their target for the loss of four wickets off the fourth ball of the twelfth over.

None of the teams below them managed to win, so Dulwich remain in seventh place. They will be hoping for better availability next week when they visit fifth placed Epsom.
