Dulwich CC 6-A-side 2013

Sunday 7th July saw the hottest day of the year and Dulwich CC hosting the return of its 6-a-Side tournament.  In a more club orientated format than previous years, 6 teams with representatives from the men’s, ladies and colts sections were joined by friends, family and a few old faces for a day’s entertainment on the hallowed turf at Burbage Road.  With Simon Bailey’s ‘Norfolk-in-Chance’ living up to their name (despite some solid bowling from Hanah Tennant) and James Bridgland’s highly eclectic ‘No-Ball Warriors’ being knocked out in the group stages, the semi-finals saw Anil Mahey’s ‘A-Mahey-Zing’ group winners perhaps surprisingly beaten by ‘The Gazzy C All-stars’ – Gareth Cornick’s ensemble of vintage, green and outright novice.  In the other semi, Tim Brown’s ‘Sixth Sense’ managed to not chase down the modest total of 40 set by James Balmforth’s ‘Sons Of Pitches’ and so the tournament lost Anne Sage, who had bowled terrifically for Tim.

In the Cornick/Balmforth final face-off, youngster Ryan Anthony blazed his way to 25 as a competitive 62 was set by the ‘SOPs’.  Captain Cornick and the vintage Allen Blackford set about that total with gusto though as the Allstars romped home, off the penultimate ball, to a deserved victory.  Before Gareth & Co collected the trophy, the Young Player of the Day award was shared between Ryan Anthony and Kai Reed (who bowled, batted and fielded with great skill for ‘A-Mahey-Zing’).

Thanks is extended to Jenny Pratt for scoring, Steve Choney for umpiring, Olly Steward and Alex Gledhill for running the BBQ and Jackie Howard for providing an excellent lunch.  A great day with a great atmosphere then, and a welcome one back on the calendar for both players and spectators to enjoy.  Oh, and some Scottish bloke won some racquet match on the other side of town.  Do your utmost to be there next year.
