Sat 18th May – 1st XI v Leatherhead
DULWICH 149-9 lost to LEATHERHEAD 152-3 by 7 wickets
Dulwich were thoroughly outplayed in their Ryman Surrey Championship Division 1 match at home to Leatherhead, and went down to defeat by 7 wickets.
Dulwich elected to bat, and Anil Mahey and Ed Savill started positively, adding 27 in nine overs with the assistance of a succession of wides. Savill then fell for 6 (off 27 balls), and Mahey was run out in the next over for 16 (off 29). Ed Carlton, with 30 off 69 balls, and debutant Frankie Brown, 22 off 52, then added 61 in 18 overs for the third wicket, leaving Dulwich well placed on 91-2 after 28 overs. Brown’s dismissal sparked a collapse as young spinners Mike Nicol and Adam Dyson imposed a stranglehold, with only 20 runs coming off the next nine overs for the loss of four more wickets to an assortment of rash shots and another run out, reducing them to 111-7. Nicol finished with 2-17 off ten overs, while Dyson had 2-28 off his ten. Skipper Tom Savill, with 17 off 38 balls, and Chris Lester, with 15 off 24, added 24 in eight overs, and last man James Bridgland hit 8 not out off seven balls to lift the total to 149-9 after their 50 overs.
Not content with their bowling stranglehold, Nicol and Dyson then opened the batting. Tom Savill and Lester beat the bat on several occasions but were unable to effect a breakthrough, and the openers had taken their partnership to 116 in the 23rd over when Savill returned for a second spell to have Dyson caught by his brother for 47, off 70 balls. Adrian Kritzinger fell first ball to the same combination, and Nicol was caught behind off Savill four overs later for 56 off 73 balls, but Dulwich were unable to effect a further breakthrough as Leatherhead cruised to victory by seven wickets with 18 overs to spare. Savill took all the wickets to fall to finish with 3-47.
Dulwich will be looking for a better all-round performance next week, at home to Cheam.
