Sat 4th Aug – 1st XI v Old Whitgiftians

OLD WHITGIFTIANS 205-9 (61) beat DULWICH 64 (30) by 141 runs

Scorecard

A miserable batting display saw Dulwich soundly defeated in their Ryman Surrey Championship Division 1 match at home to Old Whitgiftians.

The visitors chose to bat first, and were soon in trouble, losing their first three wickets for only 19 runs in 13 overs, with Tom Savill taking two and Chris Lester one. Arshad Iftikhar and James Price proved equally difficult to get away, starting with four consecutive maidens, but Ahmad Raja then launched a counter-attack, racing to 60 off 71 balls before falling to Price. His brother Ali, having previously played second fiddle, then took over the scoring before being sixth out for 46, off 102 balls, with the score on 152. A 36 minute rain break reduced the Old Whits innings to 61 overs, and Murtaza Hussain guided his side to 205-9, finishing on 49 not out off 66 balls. Price bowled 22 overs straight through to finish with 3-89. Lester had 3-33 off 15 and Savill 2-23 off 9. Stand in keeper Simon May took 3 catches.

Dulwich's reply got off to a disastrous start when Ed Matten and skipper Anil Mahey were both out first ball, lbw to Abdul Khalil, in the second over. Price was bowled by Hussain for 3 to send them in to tea at 20-3 in the sixth over. Opener Richard Farrow, with 20 off 40 balls, fell soon after, and only Stuart Ferguson, with a dogged 8 off 43 balls, Savill with 13 off 26, and Arun Mahey, 6 not out off 20, offered prolonged resistance. Dulwich were dismissed for 64 after 30 overs, with former Surrey off spinner Hussain finishing with 5-15 off 12 overs.

This defeat leaves Dulwich at the bottom of the table, and they will be hoping for an improved performance next week away to East Molesey, when the competition reverts to 50 overs a side.
