Senior Men’s Selection

As we approach the start of the league season this weekend I thought I would just set the scene from a selection point of view.

The Selection Committee has agreed the Selection Policy for 2018. This can be found here. It sets out the criteria for selection that the Committee has agreed to follow, and how it will be implemented. I would encourage you to read it and raise any issues or questions. It is impossible to cover everything but we think it captures most of the key elements.

I would like to emphasise a few things. First there are a number of factors that the Committee take in to account in its selection decisions. Clearly, performance is key but I would also stress attitude and commitment and, importantly, the payment of subscriptions. Communication is also important and all captains have agreed to communicate to players as best they can over the season.

The Selection Committee is happy to hear of any individual issues or concerns so please feel free to speak to any of the captains or myself.

With specific regard to this week’s selection we have had a large influx of new players which is great so it was difficult, in particular with little pre-season to date. Experience shows us that it does not take long for things to sort themselves out. The Selection Committee asks that all players do their utmost for the Club, their team and themselves even if they may be disappointed at where they are playing initially. The Selection Committee will not get everything right and would like nothing better than for players to ask it questions through strong performances, good attitude, etc. There is healthy competition for places so it is down to yourselves to leave the Selection Committee with no option but to select you where you deserve to be.

I would like to make a couple of pleas to players that will make things easier for all. Whilst we know that there will be unavoidable circumstances through the season, please try to minimise withdrawing after you have made yourself available and been selected. Players dropping out causes many problems for a lot of people, including your fellow players. The second thing to emphasise is that if you are injured and possibly doubtful to be able to play at the weekend, that you inform your captain and take a sensible view as to your likely availability erring on the side of caution.

May I take this opportunity, on behalf of the Selection Committee, to wish all players the best of luck for the 2018 season.
