DULWICH 81 (27.2) lost to SUNBURY 423-7 (50) by 342 runs
Dulwich suffered their second heavy defeat of the season in the Premier Division of the AJ Sports Surrey Championship, losing by a massive 342 runs at home to Sunbury.
Dulwich put their opponents in to bat, but were stunned when Sunbury skipper Rajan Soni launched a blistering attack, scoring the first 24 runs before a wide broke the sequence, and racing to his fifty off just 24 balls. He was partnered by last year’s Australia Under 19 captain Hugh Weibgem, who also laid into the bowling. The pair had put on 157 for the first wicket in just 16.3 overs when Soni fell for 88, having faced just 55 balls. But his dismissal brought no respite as Weibgem carried on relentlessly until eventually falling for 180, off just 117 balls, to make it 346-4 in the 42nd over. The later batsmen continued the onslaught and the innings closed on 423-7 after their 50 overs. Kaif Ramzan took three wickets and Joe Payne two, but none of the bowlers escaped the carnage.
Facing this colossal target, the Dulwich reply started miserably when the first wicket fell in the fourth over, and the batsmen continued to struggle against tight bowling and good fielding. Wickets went down at regular intervals as Dulwich declined to 41-7 after 14 overs. Josh Allan, playing his first match for the first team this season, provided some resistance, making 26 off 43 balls, before becoming the last man out with the score on 81.
Dulwich gain just two bowling points from this match, and drop to seventh in the table. They will look to put it behind them next week when they travel to Sutton, who have won three of their four matches and are currently top of the table.
