Dulwich Ladies Cricket
A historic first ever at Dulwich win by the Ladies team
Sun 3rd Aug 2008 home v Wanstead Heronettes
30 over friendly
What a champagne moment….in more ways than one. The Ladies turned up with 13 players, very encouraging, the rain threatened, the visitors turned up with a full team but what happened next was totally unexpected. Amy Donovan, captaining the side in the absence of Anne Sage won the toss. The visitors were put in to bat and could not cope with the Dulwich bowling, all 6 bowlers taking at least one wicket each, the fielding was the best of the season so far, 2 catches (Harriet Darroch de Haldevang and Amy Donovan) stuck and Wanstead Heronettes were bowled out for 62 in exactly 20 overs in this scheduled 30 overs friendly fixture. Dulwich then went in to bat and the opening pair took the visitors bowling apart with an opening partnership by Sophie Geldard and captain Amy Donovan of 61 runs when Sophie fell for 21, Amy was joined by Jacqi Harris-Baker and the winning runs came soon after with Amy carrying her bat for an unbeaten 44 and Jacqui on 1 not out. Just 17.1 overs were required. Every player played their part in this first ever victory for the ladies, catches, fantastic wicket keeping by stand in keeper Janet Davis some great out fielding and economical bowling. After the match, almost in tears, both coaches, Steve Choney and Alan Blackford, treated the team to a champagne celebration with a BBQ to follow. Melissa de Haldevang Co Chair of the Ladies section gave a short speech thanking everyone especially the coaches and those who have worked so hard behind the scenes to help the Ladies development get to this point. The Ladies greatly appreciated John Smith, President of the club coming down to support them and sending out a congratulations email to every one at the club. A few pints in the bar ended the great day. The ladies should take a lot of encouragement from this great break through performance and that it only took 4 matches this season to register the first win.

A brief introduction and some background
Dulwich Sports club is steeped in history, the cricket section being formed in at least 1867 and possibly even earlier. Other sports played at the Burbage Road ground are Tennis, Squash and Croquet. It is also the base for Dulwich & Honor Oak Hockey Club.
In 2004, the first developments came as a local coach and lady cricketer Lara arranged an exhibition session for lady cricketers at the Burbage Road ground and this appears to be the first recorded mention of lady cricketers at the club. However, it was not until 2006 that a new Ladies cricket section became a reality. A warm welcome was extended to the Ladies section from John Smith, the cricket club president and the initial organisers included Jane Parbury, (a qualified cricket coach), Melissa de Haldevang and Jill Davies began the process of developing the section.
Players were recruited from within the club, by word of mouth, through links with local schools and the website. Some players came through the Southwark and Surrey youth development programmes. Many arrived new to the game and some players came with previous cricketing experience.
Summer net sessions were held at Burbage Road with coaches Keith Dawkins and Steve Choney and Jane Parbury. In the winter nets were run at the new Dulwich College Preparatory school sports hall under the tutorship of Steve Choney. Offers of more coaching assistance were promised by Surrey CC whilst the Lady Taverners generously donated equipment.
During this first historic season for the ladies one match was played being a pairs fixture away at Caterham on Sat 24th September 2006 which was won by Caterham. 2007 saw more games and more players
The first ladies match at Burbage Road was a 15 overs an innings fixture on the evening of Thursday 21st June 2007 between the ladies cricket section and the hockey section. The bigger hitting Hockey section, who fielded some players with cricketing experience, won by 44 runs.
The season ended in great style with the newly formed ladies team braving the A23 on a Sunday morning en route to Surrey for a 24-over pairs match against Caterham Ladies. A terrific performance by the fledgling side with both bat and ball had the result in the balance right up until the last over; unfortunately, some erratic bowling at the death by the skipper (me!) allowed Caterham to take the honours, victors by six runs.
Nevertheless, Dulwich distinguished themselves with some excellent, tight fielding, preventing Caterham from hitting any boundaries in their innings, and scoring two runouts, one a race to the stumps by Harriet de Haldevang.
Lottie White took an astonishing six catches at mid-off. Anne Sage made a superb stumping off the canny slower bowling of Melissa de Haldevang, while Gerry Evans took two wickets in successive balls.
There were also stars with the bat, with Anne, Syd Wilson, Serena Frazer and Sunanda Gupta all making significant contributions; Lottie, with a well-struck 21 not out in four overs, ended the day top scorer.
Planning for 2008
The 2008 season promises much as we will see the club entering both an adult and under 18 team into the recently formed Surrey Trust league.
The under 16’s will play their first indoor fixture against Townley Grammar School on Saturday 26th January.
Indoor Nets starting now!
The club is running indoor nets with Allen Blackford and Steve Choney at Dulwich College Prep School on Wednesday evenings from 7.00-8.30pm. Please click here for further details
