On one of the hotter days of the season so far, a fine body of men assembled in Beckenham relishing the challenges of the day under the ‘leadership’ of the only known Greek cricketer – Pan Pylas.
The valiant DCC skipper won the toss and elected to bat first, concluding that his team being deep in batting strength would tire the opposition out. Sadly he had not assessed the long boundaries and long grass. Wickets fell regularly and with depressing frequency until the demoted ‘svelte’ (as previously reported) Wilson reverted to playing an openers innings to steady the rocky boat that was slowly sinking on the River Styx.
Runs were hard to come by and the Amblers bowlers were steady and straight in their technique. One of the two champagne moments of the day was the run out of ‘’big’ Dave Lea by Wilson who with his unaccustomed speed between the wickets ran 2 whilst ‘big’ Dave remained transfixed at one end for a single, a conversation then was had of which your reporter could not detail here on these pages due to the obscene publications act, and ‘big' Dave thus retired to the Pavilion early having technically not being run out.
DCC gradually edged, thanks to some late hitting by Andrew Dawes towards a total that would give our Greek God of a Captain to put into action his some of his cunning if not all of his plans.
Alas, Amblers batting came out strong and aggressive from the off and even with the wisdom of Mount Delphi, our Captain could not bring about any of his many cunning plans into play as the Amblers batsmen found that the way to the boundary was via an aerial route – shows that home knowledge is an advantage. However the second ‘champagne’ moment and by the far the best was ‘big’ Dave’s left hand catch in slip as the ball was all but past him only for him to find it nestled in his massive hand like a gentle butterfly.
Sadly, Amblers achieved their target all far too quickly and Pans People can only look forward to the return dance on the 16th June at the LSBU
