Match Reports for the Saturday Sixth Elevens

Saturday 24th June versus Bank of England 4th X1

Bank of England 4th X1 161 all out (S. Nadar 5-37)

Dulwich 6th X1 163 for 8 (Z. Karim 42)

Result: Dulwich won by two wickets

Eleven players at the ground on time – it could only happen at the Bank of England away! A beautiful setting and a gorgeous day with the Dulwich sixth eleven on the second pitch- what more could an ambitious player want? Steve Choney, wicket keeper extraordinaire and self appointed coach had other ideas – a warm up before the game! No chance thought Stuart McKee and Shakir Ali! Stuart had the good grace to watch whilst tying his shoelaces for fifteen minutes but Shakir stayed in hiding until the first ball was bowled.

Still panting from the pre-match exertions, the skipper won the toss and asked the Bank to bat first. The new ball pairing of Philip Parbury and Sassy Nadar soon made a mark against the experienced Bank openers. A tight opening spell eventually saw Adey caught behind by Choney for 22 off Nadar. In the warm summer’s weather Parbury continued to toil without luck whilst Jamie Hall replaced Sassy Nadar. Jamie bowled some good balls but again sprayed the ball down the legside. Mike Owen joined the attack with his in-dippers and immediately got his reward with two wickets to reduce the Bank 110 for 4.

Mike Owen had done the job. Sassy returned to the attack and in his second spell bowled with good line and length to take wickets steadily as the Bank’s middle order wilted. At the other end the skipper introduced Ashley Yiltay who bowled straight and belied his twelve years. Ashley’s four overs brought two wickets for just eighteen runs. As the Bank fell all out for 161 Sassy proudly led in his team mates with a haul of 5 for 37.

Over a sumptuous tea, the Dulwich batsmen planned their innings and much went to plan as Zeal Karim pushed the ball around for careful singles as Shakir Ali took the game to the bowlers. Anything short was smashed for a boundary by the Dulwich hitter and soon he was looking to win the game single handed.

Kendall the young opening bowler pitched a short ball to Shakir who smote the ball with some speed and venom straight. Unfortunately Kendall ducking to avoid the flat batted drive was caught on the head with all the force of a 75mph drive! All the players bar one ran to the stricken Kendall, whilst Martin saw the ball go high off his team mates head and caught it! Once Kendall was brought round his skipper insisted that he leave the field and the ambulance was called but not before Shakir Ali was given out caught off the bowler’s head for a quick fire 24.

Zeal continued to build his innings and was briefly supported by Danny Yiltay until he chose the wrong ball to slog to be bowled for 12. Jamie Hall started confidently and was soon stroking boundaries past the tiring fielders. Having made 24 Jamie did not pick the slower one and was caught and bowled with Dulwich on 120 for 3. The game had appeared won but the wicket gave life to the Threadneedle Street boys and immediately Zeal Karim was on his way back to the Pavilion after a promising 42.

Stuart McKee and Steve Choney did not linger long as Mike Owen started scratchily rarely getting the ball off the square but not getting out!  Phil Parbury came in at 128-6 and with some lofted blows got Dulwich nearer to the target before he perished for 12 at 146 -7.

The game was coming to a climax as Sassy sought to win it in boundaries. Mike Owen fell for a patient 16 with two overs left and two required. John Smith was able to watch the winning hit from the non strikers end as Sassy got a boundary to give Dulwich a deserved win by two wickets.

As the players talked in the elegant bar of the Roehampton HQ of the Bank, it was clear that the pre-match exertions had paid off for the Dulwich sixth eleven. Members of the Bank side talked of the great Dulwich teams of the 1920s and sought to make comparisons with the modern game as espoused by the young, tanned athletes in today’s sixth team.

The ghost of Gibson the profligate off spinner seems to have been firmly banished and even last year’s squad members seem to have been consigned to nursing homes and far off Greek islands. Selection committees will no doubt, continue to discuss Pan Pylas, Nick Rochford and Haseeb Chaudhary but are they yesterday’s men?
