Match Reports for the Saturday Sixth Elevens

Saturday 6th X1 versus Nat West Amblers (away)on 13th May 2006

Nat West Amblers 127 all out (S. Nadar 6-29)
Dulwich V1 128 for 2 (R.Blench 56 not out, S.Ali 37)

Result: Dulwich won by 8 wickets

The Dulwich sixth eleven set out on the short journey to Beckenham with some trepidation as the rain clouds circled the South East of London. Despite the promised appearance of tearaway quick bowler Roxroy Thomas not transpiring, Dulwich skipper John Smith called correctly and inserted the Amblers to bat on their own track.

The game with the Nat West Amblers is a regular part of the Dulwich fixture list and some of their stalwart players are well known to the more regular players. The ten Dulwich players trotted out and sought to restrain the usual fireworks of the Amblers openers. Sassy Nadar opened the bowling with lots of enthusiasm but he sought to locate his radar in the initial phases as his opening bowling partner, youngster Philip Parbury bowled a mixture of good balls and no balls. However at 28 Phil struck as the skipper moved Nick Rochford to wide mid off and Ryder carved the ball hard at him – Nick was up to the task and the Amblers were one down!

Dulwich continued to pressurise the Amblers and Nadar was soon celebrating bowling De Souza at 32 for 2. Haseeb Chaudhary joined the attack and bowled steadily without luck in a neat spell of seven overs for 25 runs, his tight line keeping the batsman tied down. At the other end Sassy settled down and took a couple more wickets to reduce the Amblers to 51 for 4.

Despite switching the bowlers around, the Dulwich fielders failed to capitalise upon a number of chances – keeper Richard Blench spending more time cursing his own efforts whilst Pan Pylas made a late entry for the Greek Olympic diving team with an athletic fumble and throw!

After the Amblers had achieved 100, Mike Owen struck with his wobbly seamers. Squire sought to dispatch him, Phil Parbury caught a difficult catch and the Amblers were 102 for 5. Scenting a chance, the Dulwich skipper switched Sassy to the far end and he responded to the call, bowling with rhythm and zest. Nadar ripped out the lower middle order starting with the free scoring Portuguese banker, de Souza for 34 – caught Pylas of all people! Sassy Nadar ended with 6- 29 off fifteen overs, a great spell which did not reduce his energy or capacity to amuse his team mates. His opening partner Parbury was brought back and took the last two wickets to finish with 3-44. The Amblers innings ended with the last five wickets falling for 25 runs enabling the ten men of Dulwich to eat a hearty tea listening to Nick Rochford talk of his two catches.

After the meal, Dulwich needed to set about their task with some urgency as the rain once more threatened. The Amblers openers bowled with some economy and eventually Pan Pylas lost patience as his Euro counterpart, de Souza got vengeance to bowl him for four runs. Richard Blench was joined by Shakir Ali. The quietly spoken engineer changed the game with some destructive hitting with three sixes and numerous boundaries. Blenchy soon joined in with some fine strokes all round the innings and despite a number of bowling changes, Dulwich looked to be cruising. However Ali tried for another six and was caught on the boundary - out for a quickfire 37 and Dulwich were 105 for 2 after their eighty three run partnership.

Mike Owen joined the senior player Blench who moved first to his fifty – almost twelve months since the last one with Richard easing Dulwich to an eight wicket win as Dan Yiltay watched with his pads on!

A good competitive game against local rivals and friends ended in an eight wicket win which was not without alarums and scares for the ten men of the Dulwich 6th X1 who headed back for the Dulwich bar to be the only winning team that day. Richard's fifty meant another jug of beer for the thirsty Dulwich players.
