Dulwich 5th XI v Chipstead Coulsdon & Walcountians

MATCH DRAWN:  Dulwich 186-7 declared, Chipstead Coulsdon & Walcountians 93-8

For the second time in three weeks, Dulwich 5th XI were denied a deserved victory by dogged tail-end resistance.

Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Dulwich suffered an early setback when opener Aidan Reeves was bowled for 5 with the score on 6.  However, second wicket pair Simon Jones (31) and David Straker (16) steadied the ship and although boundaries were difficult to come by due to the long grass in the outfield, the pitch itself was true, if rather slow, and Dulwich soon got on top of a 'friendly' home attack.  David Cook made 22 in his first innings of the season and Jim Benning recorded an unbeaten 50 as the score advanced well past the century mark.  Glen Bowley (13) and debutant Tom Lockhart (14) provided Benning with valuable support to keep the momentum going before Jamie Hall hit a breezy unbeaten 14.  The declaration came as soon as Benning reached his half-century, with the total on 186 for 7 wickets, compiled off 45.2 overs.

Tyros Jamie Hall (2-24 off 10 overs) and Kieran Reeves (1-21 off 9 overs) opened the bowling very tidily for Dulwich and the home side found runs hard to come by.  The more mature Matthew Craig (2-26 off 9 overs) and Glen Bowley (1-15 off 9 overs) effected a similar stranglehold when their turn came along and with wickets falling at regular intervals the home side side found themselves 41-5 and well behind the clock.  Middle order man Ian Dixon proved difficult to shift however and Dulwich introduced their slower bowlers in an attempt to wrap up the innings.  This met with a modicum of success, when Aidan Reeves made a splendid diving catch at cover off a short ball from Simon Jones, but with eight wickets down, Dixon eventually found an invaluable ally in skipper Glen Gershkoff.  Together, the pair defied everything all of the Dulwich bowlers could throw at them and after 43 overs and with the score on 93 time was called.  Dixon finished unbeaten on 26.

After one win and two 'moral' victories from their three friendly matches, the 5th XI are in good shape for the sterner test of league cricket which starts next Saturday with a home game against Belvedere in Division 2 of the South Thames League.
