South Thames League - Division Two
Dulwich 5th XI v Belvedere 2nd XI at London South Bank University Ground
Dulwich 143-9 innings closed
Belvedere 126 all out
Result: Dulwich won by 17 runs
The Fifths made an excellent start to their league campaign, collecting a maximum 20 points from this narrow victory over Belvedere on a slow and damp wicket beneath grey leaden skies at the LSBU ground last Saturday.
After the skipper's near 100 per cent record with the coin in the friendlies so far this season, it was on the cards that the toss would be lost for the first league game, and so it proved ! Belvedere elected to field first and although it soon started to rain opening bowlers Slater and Rawlings quickly settled into a tidy rhythm. Runs were at a premium on a slow-paced wicket, which had received a drenching the day before, and even shots which beat the fielders slowed down on the increasingly damp outfield. Dulwich lost young opener Aidan Reeves, caught at square leg for 6 with the score on 13, and this brought run-machine Pratish Dayalji to the crease. Dayalji hit a quickfire 18, but just as he appeared to be getting on top of the bowling, the vice-captain fell victim to a fine running catch at mid-on. David Straker (1), David Cook (11) and Ben D'Anvers (0) all went cheaply to leave the Dulwich innings precariously placed at 71-5. At the other end, however, number 2 bat Dan Russell was unmoved and he went on to make a painstaking but invaluable 28 before being the sixth man out at 92. Sensing that even a moderate total could be a match-winning score on this wicket, Dulwich's lower middle order applied themselves with commendable resolution and set about ensuring that they occupied the crease for the maximum 45 overs. Glen Bowley (17) and Matthew Craig (14) helped the score along as the rain finally relented, but it was a ninth wicket stand of 24 between battle-scarred wicket-keeper Peter Rochford (20) and someone at the opposite end of the age spectrum, 16 year-old Danny Durham (7 not out), that proved decisive. Eventually, Dulwich closed on 143 for 9.
After tea, Belvedere found runs no easier to come by against the Dulwich opening pair of Matthew Craig and Danny Durham. The former's nagging accuracy and the latter's lively pace gradually received its reward and wickets began to fall at regular intervals. Glen Bowley and Ben D'Anvers also chipped in with a valuable wicket apiece and Craig returned to dismiss number 7 bat Rawlings whose aggressive 20 threatened, albeit briefly, to turn the tide back in Belvedere's favour. Dan Russell (2-24) helped Craig (4-39) to mop up the tail and the visitors were dismissed for 126, leaving our Dulwich heroes to retire to the pavilion victors by the margin of 17 runs.
