Match Reports for Saturday 4th X1

Saturday 8th July at home to Belvedere

Belvedere 1st XI 228 for 4 in 45 overs (J.Leaver 68, D.Thomas 58)

Dulwich 4th XI 183 for 6 in 45 overs (O.Shokoya 72, P.Rice 52)

Result: Dulwich (4 points) losing draw

On a good track with a fast outfield, league leaders Belvedere set off at a brisk pace, with the 50 coming up in the 11th over, and Leaver and Thomas continued on, reaching 100 in the 21st over.  Ian Marshall and Deb Biswas tried to keep some sort of pressure on them and Leaver eventually fell to Marshall with the score on 117.  ‘Cymbals’ Thomas should also have gone around this time when he crashed an edge off Biswas, but to general bemusement it was deemed not out.

Tarun Mahey was calmness personified when he came on to bowl, and helped reduce Belvedere to 146 for 3 and slowed down the runs.  But hopes that further wickets would fall, leaving Dulwich with a good target, came to nothing as some late blows left Belvedere on 228 for 4.

Dulwich’s reply got off to a shaky start, losing two quick wickets, but then Peter Rice and Obafemi Shokoya came together and steadied things on what was still a very good track.  Their 50 partnership came in 96 balls, but it meant that a sound base had been set for the run chase.  Shokoya reached his 50 (80 balls) and then soon after guided Rice to an all-run four to bring up the 100.  After the oxygen mask had been removed from the pitch, they continued to accelerate, with the 100 partnership coming in 146 balls.

Rice made his 50 with a glorious six over mid-wicket, but fell soon after on 52 (95 balls, 5 fours, 1 six) with the score on 142 for 3.  Sadly Shokoya fell soon after on 72 and the momentum for a run chase was lost, and it was left to Marshall and Mahey to bat out the last few overs to see Dulwich close on 183 for 6.

Champagne Moment: Peter Rice’s six to bring up his fifty.

Pickled Egg Award: James de Gouveia’s time-keeping.
