Match Reports for Saturday 4th X1
Saturday 1st July
Old Colfeians 185 all out in 44.5 overs (T.Mahey 4 for 41)
Dulwich 187 for 9 in 44 overs
Result: Dulwich (16 points) won by 1 wicket
In one of the most gripping games of the season, the balance ebbed and flowed between the two sides, as Dulwich made enormously hard work over reaching a very gettable target. Dulwich were put in the field to start, and Deb Biswas and Ian Marshall kept things very tight, so that the OCs were 38 for 2 in 18 overs, thanks in part to a superb catch at second slip by Richard Blench. But four overs later the score was 80 and it was left to Tarun Mahey, making his 4th XI debut, to calm things down. The third wicket fell on 110, and after that it was a steady procession back to the pavilion, as Mahey picked up four wickets, with good support in the outfield, including two good catches by the skipper to surprise all. Dulwich picked up the final wicket with a ball to go and the score on 185, having probably let them get a few more runs than they deserved. It nearly proved crucial.
Alan Edwards got Dulwich off to a brisk start, but was disappointed (if ever there was a euphemism!) to be given out LBW on 17. Thereafter the runs dried up, with Ralph Tomlinson taking 51 minutes (35 balls) to get off the mark as he struggled to find his touch. Blench and James de Gouveia turned things round with a 66 partnership in just 10 overs. But both fell in quick succession, to be followed by Marshall after a shot he’d rather forget. Suddenly it was 139 for 5.
With all the top order gone, wickets fell steadily. A crucial 11 from Jason Campbell brought the total nearer, but when Steve Choney went out to join Mahey the score was183 for 9. The batsmen having crossed, Mahey faced the last ball of the over before leaving the No 11 to deal with the pressure. Unfazed by the situation, he clipped the ball for four to ensure a relieved Dulwich side didn’t end up throwing away two games to the same opposition this season.
Champagne Moment: Tarun Mahey’s four to win the match.
Pickled Egg Award: Ian Marshall for his over-confident and brain-dead drive to the hands of mid-off, third ball of his innings.
