Match Reports for Saturday 4th X1

Saturday 15th July away to Bexley

Dulwich 172 for 6 in 45 overs (J.Matkins 5 for 43)

Bexley 173 for 3 in 32.3 overs (R.Griggs 58 NO)

Result: Dulwich (0 points) lost by 7 wickets

Against one of the bottom sides, and on a stiflingly hot day, skipper Ian Marshall won a rare toss and decided to bat first at South Bank.  For a while, all seemed well as Alan Edwards plundered 32 quick runs (36 balls, 6 fours) before falling with the score on 44.  Peter Rice was then joined by James Johnson, and the momentum of the innings fell away in the face of some good, steady bowling.  It took Johnson 40 balls to reach double figures, and the 50 partnership took 87 balls.

Then, just as both players began to accelerate, Johnson fell for 23 and Rice for 39.  Soon, from 100 for 1, Dulwich were 115 for 5 in 32 overs.  David Woods and James Braim did some rebuilding work, but neither could really accelerate against Bexley’s bowling, and Dulwich ended up on 172 for 7 after their 45 overs.  On a good batting track, it was an inadequate total.

But the hope was, with an inexperienced side and struggling to find form, Bexley would melt under pressure.  Sadly, the Dulwich bowlers and fielders failed to exert any.  Some tough chances went begging and the score was 54 before Dulwich had any luck – and even that was a mixed blessing.  One opener drove the ball back at Braim, who dropped the catch – onto his stumps to run out the other opener.  When a second wicket fell at 64, there was a glimmer of a chance.  In reality, that was as good as it got for Dulwich, as Bexley cruised to the required total with seven wickets and 12.3 overs in hand.  It was easily Dulwich’s worst performance of the season, against a team who had failed even to muster a side in the first fixture.

Champagne Moment: None.

Pickled Egg Award: So many candidates…
