South Thames League – Division Two
Dulwich 5th XI 222-3 innings closed
Old Colfeians 4th XI 169 all out
Result: Dulwich won by 53 runs
Dulwich’s bid for top spot was made even clearer this week, as they rolled through the Colfeians batting order, having set a good total on an even better pitch.
JL actually winning the toss has been a rarity so far this season, so when the fifth XI captain actually called correctly, the team were filled with a brimming confidence. The start of the Dulwich innings reflected the energy within the side, with Clive Saunders and Glen Bowley opening after JL decided to bat on an immaculately prepared wicket. Clive immediately seemed to take a more subtle approach into scoring his runs, delicately nudging the ball around and playing with a careful eye. His partner Glen decided he’d have a good swing at the ball, and just like the week before he set about ripping into the opposition bowling attack with sheer menace. He smashed 17 runs, four of which came in boundaries, before losing his wicket as he was bowled attacking a straight delivery in the sixth over. With our number two shocking the opposition leg side fielders, who knows what was in their minds as Leon Willis came out to bat at number three. Like his predecessor, Leon played some good strokes, scoring 14 runs, though after 7 overs at the crease lost his wicket as he was caught. Richard Blench replaced him and set about scoring yet another half-century in Saturday matches, batting in a similar light to Glen, eager to dispatch the ball at every opportunity. He began scoring at lightning speed, and reached 20 runs in no time at all. His run rate dipped however, as for a while he seemed to be unable to keep the strike as his progress was stifled by some good field placements. This trend didn’t keep forever though, and before long Richard had made his 50, as had Clive, who managed to bat all the way through the Dulwich innings. The two played a flurry of big shots, and the Dulwich total boomed along in the second half of their innings. The two had a partnership of 153 which was eventually broken in the 42nd over when Richard Blench was bowled out for 60, going for another big hit. Clive was joined by Aidan Reeves, and in the searing heat the pair managed to add 18 runs off the last two overs. Clive triumphantly walked off the field, having held together the Dulwich innings with an unbeaten 92, the team total reaching 222 for the loss of three wickets.
Having been fully refreshed, the Dulwich fielders were more than ready for the job in hand. Although they had posted a good total, the side knew that it would be difficult to dismiss the opposition on such a pitch. John passed the ball to Matthew Craig, whose nagging line and length seemed to unsettle the batsmen from the start. The initial breakthrough came in the second over, as Kieran Reeves managed to do enough with the ball to make their number one attempt to play a hook shot to a delivery that took his leg stump out just above half way up. The wicket was huge for the side, and everyone was on their toes waiting for the next Colfeians to drop. The duo of K.Reeves and Craig continued to eat into the Colfeians top order. The run rate was slow, though a winning draw would have been possible in their eyes. However, within the first 12 overs, Dulwich picked up four wickets. Clive Saunders took a good catch at mid-on off the bowling of Matthew, with the other two coming from big lbw shouts. Reeves was replaced by Ashley Yiltay, and Craig gave way to James De Gouviea. The new bowling pair had less luck than the last and were slightly more expensive, though James De Gouviea managed to claim an lbw, most likely due to the ferocity of his appeal which was enough to scare the life out of a water buffalo. Dulwich were troubled very little, and it was only the superb eye of their number 6, David Mott that ever looked like taking victory away from Dulwich. He scored an unbeaten 79, playing some fabulous strokes. However, Matthew Craig came back at the end, and in a flurry of good balls, managed to bowl out the opposition’s last four batsmen - three of them in the same over. He ended up with figures of 6-30, and sealed the victory for Dulwich.
Dulwich now rest only 2 points off first position behind Gravesend, who they will face on the last day of the season
