Match Reports for Saturday 4th X1
Saturday 12th August away to Sidcup
Sidcup 235 for 4 in 40 overs (B.Patey 110)
Dulwich 177 for 7 in 40 overs (G.McKenna 54)
Result: Dulwich (4 points) losing draw
With a chill breeze blowing and rain forecast, it was decided to reduce the game to 40 overs a side. After which Dulwich won the toss and chose to field. The young opening partnership of Danny Durham and Patrick Carnegy struggled to find consistency as Sidcup reached 50 after just nine overs. So skipper Ian Marshall turned to the experience of James Braim and David Woods, who began to get a grip. Two quick wickets fell to reduce Sidcup from 74 for 0 to 76 for 2.
As the rain began to fall, bowling and fielding became more difficult and ex-Dulwich player Barry Patey kept on going steadily, getting useful support near the end as they accelerated, and eventually reached a chanceless century. To Dulwich’s surprise, Sidcup continued on right to the end of their allotted 40 overs, amassing a formidable 235 for 4.
In reply, Pratish Dayalji got off to a brisk start, playing shots all the time and eventually falling for 35 (37 balls, 4 fours) when he tried one shot too many, to leave Dulwich on 49 for 2. This left Clive Saunders and Grant McKenna to rebuild, and by the halfway stage of the innings, Dulwich were on 100 for 2 (compared to Sidcup’s 89 for 2 at the comparable stage of their innings).
But when Saunders fell with the score on 131, it was the start of a mini-collapse that left Dulwich with only a draw to play for. The Sidcup bowlers took the pace off the ball, McKenna was starved of the strike, eventually falling for a superb 54 on debut (56 balls, 8 fours, 1 six). Once more it was left to Woods to see out the last few overs, ably supported by Tarun Mahey, who fell with two balls left when the result was secure. Woods hit 18 off the penultimate over to secure an extra batting point, and then came off the field to check what had been going on in the captain’s head when he got himself out. He was not alone in his line of questioning.
With only two games left in the season, Dulwich lie fourth in the league, but with the top two sides playing each other, and having only one game left, the destination of the league title could easily depend on the outcome of the return fixture between Dulwich and Sidcup on 2 September.
Champagne Moment: David Woods’s 18 in an over to secure an extra batting point.
Pickled Egg Award: Ian Marshall’s dismissal, lobbing the ball to mid-on at a time of trying to secure a draw.
