Match Report for the Saturday 5th XI on 29th April 2006

DULWICH 220-2 dec

STREATHAM MARLBOROUGH 118-8

The 5th XI had much the better of this opening fixture against local rivals Streatham Marlborough at Dulwich Common, but were denied victory by the home side's ninth wicket pair.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Dulwich got off to an excellent start with openers Pratish Dayalji and Simon Jones putting on 131 for the first wicket.  Vice-captain Dayalji was eventually run out for 65, whilst Jones went on to make 63.  Shakir Ali and David Straker kept the score moving, with the former racing to an unbeaten 41 after hitting leg spinner Barry Andrews for four successive sixes.  Straker made 23 not out and Dulwich declared with the total on 220-2 after 39 overs.

Streatham Marlborough's response stuttered from the outset against opening bowlers Jamie Hall (2-40) and David Hawes (3-33) and they lost wickets at regular intervals.  The home side were also tied down by the left-arm spin of Paul Hoogland (3-24 off 16 overs) and decided to bat out for a draw.  Ninth wicket pair Mark Matzen and Chris Reardon provided the stubborn resistence necessary and they defied all the Dulwich bowlers to survive the last six overs.  Streatham Marlbough's final tally was 118-8, made off 43 overs.
