Dulwich 3rd XI v Sanderstead 3rd XI (away) 30th August
2003
Result:
Dulwich won by 7 wickets
Sanderstead 90 for 9 in 55 overs
Dulwich 91 for 3 in 20.3 overs (T.Cable 52 not out)
Dulwich concluded their promotion-winning season with a comfortable
victory over bottom-of-the-table Sanderstead on a very damp wicket.
Skipper Stewart Harmer yet again won the toss and asked Sanderstead
to bat. Ian Marshall took two early wickets, the first thanks
to an excellent catch by Clive Saunders in the covers. Along
with Tony Cable, he has been the star in the field this year.
Fellow opener Glen Bowley then took the next two wickets and
after 14 overs Sanderstead had reached an impressive 8 for 4.
Wickets became harder to come by, and the runs failed to flow
- half way through the innings they had reached 24 for 6, and
attention began to wander among the fielders as nothing much
happened.
Naveem Saleem, Tony Cable and the captain all tried their luck
as bowlers, with Cable and Harmer both learning one part of a
bowler's frustration, as catches went down. But Cable did manage
to take a wicket. With Marshall having joined David Woods as
the season's leading wicket-taker, the senior pro wasn't going
to let go off the opportunity that came his way to regain the
lead, and his three wickets ensured that he would finish on top.
Eventually, after 55 overs, we were all put out of our misery
as the innings was closed, with Sanderstead having reached 90
for 9 - one of only five occasions all season when the bowlers
had failed to dismiss the opposition.
In reply Peter Rice and John Acland-Hood were dismissed early
on to take the score to 34 for 2 in eight overs. Meanwhile, Cable
was striking the ball well, though on one occasion the ball hit
back. Then came one of the most astonishing dropped catches of
the season, as Cable looped a ball very gently up to the keeper,
who dropped it. He needed no further encouragement and went on
to reach his fifty in 55 balls (1 six and 7 fours), given fine
support by Sunil Mahey (28 not out).
Sadly Old Wimbledonians had also won, which meant that Dulwich
missed out on the title by a single point. But the side returned
to Dulwich to celebrate a terrific season that had been completed
undefeated. Now for the Premiership in 2004...
