Dulwich 3rd XI v Worcester Park 3rd XI (home) 26 July 2003
Result:
Dulwich won by 3 wickets
Worcester Park 138 in 53.2 overs
(D.Woods 4 for 36)
Dulwich 139 for 7 in 38.4 overs
Dulwich struggled home in the drizzle to score their first win
in three games at the end of a tense game against sixth-placed
Worcester Park and so ensured they remained in the second promotion
spot.
Choosing to field, and welcoming back Jason Speer from injury,
Dulwich got off to an unusually uneventful start. After 20 overs
Worcester Park had moved on to 48 for one. Then it was the turn
of the spinners, David Begg and David Woods, who both bowled
with great control and accuracy on a pitch that was giving both
turn and bounce. They were well supported in the field, so after
40 overs the score had risen to just 113 for four.
A great diving catch by Clive Saunders on the square leg boundary
set a standard for the rest to follow, which he matched with
two further excellent catches. In the end, after so many recent
dropped catches, Dulwich took nine out of ten chances, with Ian
Marshall the only one to fail (as part of an idiosyncratic* performance
by him in the field).
Wickets began to tumble as the innings drew to a close, but
there was still nothing like urgency from Worcester Park. Woods
picked up four wickets to take his season's total to 30 at 12.5,
Begg took three, and Marshall came back at the end to finish
with three and take his total to 24 at 14.6.
So Dulwich went out to bat chasing a target of 139, and after
11 overs were 55 for one, thanks to a positive start dominated
by Cable who was out for 36 (40 balls). It was the top score
of the match, for clearly this was a day when only one half-century
was to be celebrated - Mr Pres! As the drizzle became more persistent,
Dulwich's batting became a bit of a shower, and they collapsed
to 67 for four. Andy Rycroft and David Woods both batted sensibly,
each making 24 and taking the score to 103, before another flurry
of wickets saw Dulwich slip to 116 for seven. With both sides
feeling they could win, they stayed out in the now-steady rain,
and Rohan Karat and Jason Speer saw the home side to a tense
victory that had captain Harmer reaching for the beers.
Next week Dulwich visit thirteenth-placed Chertsey. Thanks to
the rain Dulwich are now just five points behind league leaders
Old Wimbledonians and 17 ahead of third-placed Woking & Horsell.
