Dulwich 3rd XI v Old Emanuel 3rd XI
(away) 21 June 2003
Result: Dulwich won by 7 wickets
Old Emanuel 142 in 50.3 overs (I.Marshall 4-35)
Dulwich 146 for 3 in 23.4 overs (T.Cable 71 not out)
On another hot and sunny Saturday afternoon, Dulwich continued
their relentless pursuit of Old Wimbledonians at the top of the
table with a fifth consecutive victory.
Skipper Harmer called correctly and Dulwich took the field in
the midday, mid-summer heat. Another left-arm opening partnership,
David Woods and Ian Marshall, took a little longer to make the
first breakthrough than in recent weeks, having to wait till
the fourth over for a victim to arrive. But once he fell, there
was a blaze of exuberant shots, some connecting with the ball
and others leaving it to hit the stumps instead, as Old Emanuel
moved to 57-4 in 14 overs. At this rate, it was all going to
be finished by three.
But then calm descended as the No 6 came in and gave all eleven
fielders a masterclass in the art of the forward defensive lunge.
For several overs, Marshall gave him the opportunity to repeat
the shot and it soon became clear it was going to be a case of
who got bored first. The rest of the fielders took the opportunity
to have their drinks break at this stage, and one was seen to
finish the new Harry Potter. Finally, the defence was breached
as Marshall took his fourth wicket and the action could resume.
Glen Bowley took a couple of late wickets, as did Woods to take
his haul to three. But the highlight was the arrival of Stewart
Harmer into the attack for the first time this season. His tricky
spell of demon spin so unnerved the batsmen that the job of Bowley
and Woods was easy, and his figures of 4-1-5-0 show just what
an impact he had on the entire course of the game.
The main surprise in the Dulwich innings was that it took seven
overs before Tony Cable began to outscore Peter Rice. When he
did so, Rice was so shocked he was out for 16 at 44. Sam Taylor
joined Cable and they put on 50 in 49 balls, with Cable reaching
his half-century in just 44 balls. Taylor was out for 17 at 102,
and Andy Rycroft fell soon after. James Hemmings and Cable then
saw Dulwich through to victory, although Hemmings was dropped
twice on the way to 12. Cable finished undefeated on 71 (64 balls,
10 fours, 1 six), his second successive fifty, fourth of the
season and now averages just over 50. Once again, the Dulwich
batting had cruised to victory at six runs an over.
Next week Dulwich host Camberley, looking for a sixth victory
on the bounce.
