Match Reports

Saturday 31st May 2003
Dulwich 3rd XI v Weybridge 3rd XI

Result: Dulwich won by 8 Wickets

Weybridge 162 (R.Karat 4 for 38) in 47 overs
Dulwich 163 for 2 (L.Bernhard 70 not out, T.Cable 58) in 27 overs

Dulwich destroyed third-placed Weybridge in the heat at the Hollies on Saturday in a superb all-round performance. Like Dulwich, Weybridge came into the match full of confidence, having won both their previous games that had not been weather-affected. Weybridge were put in to bat, and got off to a decent start, seeing off the opening attack as they put on 56 for the first wicket. But Kanak Patel began to tie them down, and Rohan Karat, once he came off his shorter run, started hitting the wickets, bowling all four of his victims.

Wickets began to tumble at a steady rate, with only Pope holding together the middle order. As Kanak and Rohan tired in the heat, Stewart Harmer turned to his left-arm duo of David Woods and Ian Marshall, who shared the last five wickets between them, including a spectacular diving catch at extra cover from the captain that left his team-mates open-mouthed in amazement and Stewart calling for a beer.

On a slow, low track, Weybridge's only hope was to create some early pressure, but the dismissal of Peter Rice with the score on 24 only served to bring in Lawrence Bernhard. He and Tony Cable destroyed the Weybridge attack, scoring at about seven runs per over as they took the score past 100 before Tony was finally bowled for 58, having hit only 10 fours, which meant he had to run 18 of his runs. Hot work!

Lawrence was joined by Andy Rycroft, and between them they played some glorious shots to see Dulwich home in just 27 overs: 163 runs in 162 balls! Lawrence's undefeated 70 featured 11 fours, some glorious shots, and one or two moments of luck, but it was a fine innings.

Next week Dulwich host Leatherhead at the Hollies and will look to continue their winning run.
