Dulwich 3rd XI v Esher 3rd XI (away)
Result: Dulwich won by 126 runs
Dulwich 167 (A.Rycroft 59) in 44.1 overs
Esher 41 in 21.4 overs
Dulwich crushed a weak Esher side fielding two boys
yet to reach their teens on Saturday. Esher were even
further troubled when, in the second over, their keeper
went over on his ankle and had to be whisked off to
hospital. Similarly, Dulwich got off to a poor start,
tumbling to 20 for 3 against some good bowling. With
the top three all back in the pavilion, the pressure
was on Andy Rycroft and Chris Smith to pull things
round. Batting sensibly and running aggressively, they
put on more than forty runs before Chris was out. Indeed,
Chris had his first (but not last) disagreement when
he was run out by the bowler for backing up too early,
only for the Esher captain to withdraw the appeal.
Andy and David Woods then put on more than fifty to
take the score to 126 for 6, when Andy was out for
an excellent 59. Lusty hitting at the end by Glen Bowley
and Rohan Karat, who, in a tactical masterstroke by
Stewart Harmer, was kept back to No 11 when the opposition
would never expect someone to play such glorious shots,
took the score to 167 all out.
With only eight wickets to take, including the two
boys, on an uncertain track, Dulwich were strong favourites
to win. In his third over David Woods took three wickets,
peppering the leg stump with balls of varying length
and watching on as Esher lobbed the ball to square
leg and the grateful hands of David Begg. Bowling with
fire and pace, Chris Smith took a wicket in his next
over and Esher were 12 for 4. Fortunately, he saw the
funny side when a no-ball was called some time after
the ball had reached the keeper. By then the game was
essentially over, with only the threat of rain to cause
any fears. A brief rally by Esher was brought to its
inevitable end when Rohan Karat and Ian Marshall took
two wickets each to dismiss the side for a feeble 41.
They both benefited from fine catches at third slip
by Chris Smith, the first off Rohan being particularly
spectacular.
Next week Dulwich host Weybridge when they should
be able to put out an even stronger side and so continue
their challenge at the top of the table.
