Saturday Third X1 Match Reports

Versus Walton on Thames (H) – Surrey Championship on 24th June 2006

Walton on Thames 73 all out (R.Karat 4-39, K.Dawkins 3-10) in 27.4 overs

Dulwich 74 for 0 wickets (S.Heath 50*, S.Mahey 20*) in 11.2 overs

Result: Dulwich won by 10 wickets

Having outplayed Walton at their ground in the first game of the season, a combination in that game of losing the toss, fielding a number of Dulwich debutantes, and atrocious weather conditions, meant that Dulwich had had to settle for a winning draw.  It was satisfying therefore that 13 points were gained on this occasion with plenty to spare.  Enough time available after the game therefore to consider some of the nicknames which have been conceived on the field of play this season - for the uninitiated, this week’s cast is listed below….

The Walton IX – yes, IX not XI - arrived after the statutory start time, duly lost the toss, and were placed immediately on the back foot by the opening bowlers whose line & length this week were much improved.  Jasper Carrott’s pace and movement pulled an LBW decision from the umpire in only the third over which was soon followed up by the number three seeing his stumps out of the ground.  There was almost a third for Jasper as an edge was almost grabbed in mid-air by Sunil ‘Jerzy’ Mahey whose dive from gully was reminiscent of his Anfield goalkeeping hero in the 2005 European Cup Final!

2 for two soon became 18 for three as Bruce Willis came in on the act as a slice to gully was swallowed by Versace.  Bruce’s fitness instruction with coach Robbo this week clearly paid off as he lasted an amazing 7 overs (instead of the customary half dozen) before a breather was required.  KD Lange came on first change and was soon amongst them too, kicking off with an LBW decision against the opposition’s wicket keeper.  Dulwich’s own glove man, Sam Taylor (playing his first game of the season in this particular side, so therefore not yet christened with a nickname as yet) then took a good catch standing up to Langy.

Meanwhile at the other end, when about to be replaced, Jasper kept finding another wicket at the last minute and ended up bowling throughout to end up with 4 for 39.  Poor old – or should that be young – Trisha who, having been out doing GCSEs for the last month, was made to wait for another week before being given another chance to show his potential for the future.  KD Lang completed the destruction by having the Walton captain caught in the covers by Nelson Piquet.

After the highly successful chase of 200 against a reasonable Wimbledon attack the previous week, a meagre 73 was never going to be a problem for the Dulwich line-up.  Ted Heath dealt predominantly in flaying anything loose to the boundary, while Jerzy provided the appropriate supporting role picking up singles and twos when the opportunity arose.  Nelson – who had thought he was assured of a bat this week when being told at lunchtime that he had retained the number three spot – watched despondently from the sidelines as Ted took Dulwich over the line with a shot that concurrently brought up his half century.

So a ten wicket victory which unfortunately gave Dulwich a mere 13 points more than the opposition – the gaps between the teams was surely worth more than that.  The only other disappointing aspect of the day was the fact that opportunities were taken away from seeing Trisha turn his arm over, of watching Nelson build a big innings – something he is surely capable of – and allowing newcomer Olly Cowley perform with either bat or ball.  Captain Jose Maskers took great heart from such a thumping victory which has been on the horizon for a while.  There was a general agreement amongst the Dulwich players during the extra long post match session in the bar afterwards that any team which turns up late with no apology to a premiership game with only nine players deserved to be sent back to where they came from as soon as possible – both back down the A3 and back down to Division One.

THIS WEEK’S STAR CAST:

Jeff ‘Jose Maskers’ Mascarenhas

Patrick ‘Trisha’ Carnegy

Keith ‘Langy’ Dawkins

Stephen ‘Ted’ Heath

Rohan ‘Jasper’ Karat

Paul ‘Nelson PK’ Keymer

Sunil ‘Jerzy’ Mahey

Paul ’Versace’ Smith

Adam ‘Bruce’ Willis

Champagne moment: KD’s delivery to someone from a previous club in Manchester before actually recognising him and saying ‘Is that you Dean?,’ followed by a call back to KD from a nameless fielder  – ‘Yes, it is me Dad’!

Pickled egg moment: Tea not being ready until the game was completed at 4pm
