Saturday Third X1 Match Reports
Normandy away on 2nd June 2007 in the Surrey Championship
Normandy 175 all out (S. Weston 8-45)
Dulwich 164 all out (S.Heath 46)
Result: Lost by 11 runs
On a beautiful sunny day Dulwich travelled to Normandy and possibly one of the slowest wettest wickets they’ll play on all year. Jose won the toss again! Hoping to make best use of the damp wicket he of course inserted the opposition.
Opening bowlers, newbie Dave “Spaghetti” Weston and The Legend that is KP produced a masterful opening 20 overs ripping out 4 wickets and restricting Normandy to 58 for 4 off 22 overs with a combination of pace, cunning and good fielding, including a great catch from our very own “tooth puller” Amer Saeed.
With such a great start Dulwich must have been looking to keep Normandy down to a respectable total. However, the introduction of Prasanna “The Business” Callaghan and Keith “Langy Long Hop” Dawkins brought about a change of fortunes that was to alter the whole match. The “Chef” and “Langy” produced a mediocre 15 over spell that saw Normandy race away to 120 without further loss, the batsmen punishing anything remotely offline or length, of which there were plenty to choose.
The introduction of Stephen “The Judge” Heath with some well controlled and executed leg spin and then the return of the “invisible man” Dave Weston, saw normality restored. “Spaghetti” going on to record personal best figures of a magnificent 17-3-45-8 taking the last 5 wickets to fall, the final two coming through sheer determination and effort on a very hot day!
Normandy finished on 175 all out but with Dulwich fielding a strong batting line up, not an “ungettable” total.
“Jose” (rightly restoring himself to a top order position), and Amer began the innings well, easily reaching 49 without loss and looking comfortable, before a rash shot saw the end of the skipper. In came “Abo” as Spaghetti likes to call him and he and Amer again looked in no trouble, before another “well judged leave” from Amer “Shoulder Arms” Saeed , left him plumb in front. Grant soon followed with a “curious” lbw decision to his name while again looking very comfortable.
All was not lost though with the score at 80-3, however “Jesse” came and went faster than a gunslingers draw! Guiding a wide long hop into gully’s hands for “goldie”
So Dulwich still required 90 with only 6 wickets left, again, the two batsmen Heath and Sammy Taylor looked comfortable reaching 106, however another gift to Normandy came along when Taylor offered slip catching practice despite looking good up to that point. Another newbie the sprog that is Tom “Pitch ‘n’” Putt played a breezy cameo role and managed to remain quiet long enough to score 10 before chancing the aerial route one too many times.
The legend joined Ted, and played his usual cool and calm innings before deciding he could make the 22yds in 3 seconds flat and was run out by 5 of them at least. This was the killer blow, and despite Stevie Heath trying his best to get Dulwich over the line, couldn’t quite manage it and was caught on the boundary going for yet another maximum, for an excellent 46 full of sublime timing and placement. Callaghan and Dawkins miserable days were made complete when they were both bowled for 1 and 0 respectively and Dulwich went down by 11 runs. A great game for the neutral but a sickener for the Dulwich lads.
