Saturday Third X1 Match Reports
Versus Normandy (A) – Surrey Championship on 2nd September 2006
Normandy 196 for 9 wickets declared (K.Patel 5-37) in 52.5 overs
Dulwich 192 for 7 wickets (A.Edwards 74) in 48 overs
Result: Dulwich winning draw
This was an end of season match in many ways – there was a strong wind blowing, rain was in the air, and neither team was in a position to win honours and both sides were safe from relegation. The home team won the toss and batted. After a minute’s silence observed for the recent and sudden loss of Glen Bowley – which was impeccably observed by the home team also – Dulwich took to the field.
The weather was put to one side and Normandy got into the spirit of things by playing around with their batting order sending out their opening pair to loud music 20/20 style. However, both were sent back pretty quickly recording ducks as Legend and Dallas got themselves onto the final scorecard of the season in their opening overs. Dallas soon tired to be replaced by Bruce who stated he wanted to take five and reach 20 wickets for the season. His team-mates had not seen him want to bowl such a long spell all season and the athleticism he showed in holding onto a return chance was brilliant. He extracted an LBW decision against the oppo’s skipper but eventually he tired and spin was introduced.
Meanwhile, Legend continued from the other end giving very little away and forcing the batsmen into shots they probably didn’t want to play. When finally replaced after 18 overs, he had taken 5 wickets for just 37 runs. The reversed batting was becoming more apparent in the meantime as the spin twins Ted and Tiger received little help from the surface or the conditions. Ted managed to collect one wicket when Shok removed the bails nicely when the Normandy run machine was finally trapped out of his ground. Normandy closed their innings in the 53rd over on 196 for 9.
Bloke and Versace opened the chase and Bloke in particular looked like a man possessed as he flayed the bowling to all parts. Shok came in at three at the downfall of Versace and the run rate was maintained until a flurry of wickets saw Shok, Bloke, Miami and Ted back in the hutch in quick succession. Skipper Jose Umar – back from his holiday – then played a glorious off drive for four, then in an attempt to repeat the shot looked as though he should have stayed on the beach! This brought Tiger to the crease to join Smiler at 146 for 6, and together they consolidated although the run rate was sacrificed in order to prevent the immediate loss of further wickets. It got to the stage where a very gettable 15 was apparently required from 3 overs, when a shout came from the scorebox that there had been a miscalculation and only 2 overs were remaining! So, the batsmen tried to put their feet on the gas pedal but it was just a little too much to ask for and Dulwich fell an agonisingly five runs short and had to settle for the winning draw.
