Saturday Third X1 Match Reports
Leatherhead & Cobham at home on 23rd June 2007 in the Surrey Championship
Dulwich 106 all out in 39 overs
Leatherhead & Cobham 109 for 6 wickets (D. Biswas 5-29) in 42.1 overs
Result: Dulwich lost by two wickets
There was some bemusement on the face of the players when Jose turned up to lead his 3rd XI troops at South Bank on Saturday afternoon as many were wondering if he should be elsewhere after the announcement that Mascarenhas had been selected for the England side. But clearly that was just those who had never been treated to seeing the Dulwich brand of Mascarenhas turning his arm over.
And so it was that Jose lost the toss and the Dogs were again inserted on a slow wicket. The returning Versace soon made his mark on the season by proceeding to get lost on his way to the game - despite it being at home - and then running out his opening partner before slapping a long hop down cover’s throat. Chasing Leather missed a straight one and Dulwich were 54 for 3. Jose smacked a few boundaries before again falling to a spinner, this time for 28. The Legend fell to yet another LBW decision against him, and then Teenager ‘Pitch And’ copied his captain by hitting a couple of boundaries and then offering a catching chance when on 17 – Dulwich now reeling at 88 for 6. Would the tail wag? Not this week – four quick wickets fell as the clouds gathered in more ways than one, Dulwich dismissed for a paltry 106 with Trini left stranded on 17.
The troops were fired up after tea to show some fight on a wicket on which runs were always going to be hard to come by, and in his first game back after exams (although we are not quite sure on what he was being tested) Dallas found his length immediately by snapping up four quick wickets to leave the oppo struggling at 12 for 4. It was now that the heavens opened and the players were forced to take their leave for the next 90 minutes. The equation on their return to the field was that Leatherhead & Cobham required three runs per over with six wickets in hand. However, the rain had caused the pitch to slow even further and as the ball got older, wickets became more difficult to come by. A cameo performance with the bat from the L&C opening bowler saw them home with a couple of overs to spare, although a sterling performance by the bowlers and fielders kept the visitors under pressure all the way through. Special mention goes to Dallas who completed his first Surrey Championship 5-wicket haul for the Club.
