Saturday Second X1 end of season report for 2006
Fresh from winning the 1st Division in 2005, the 2nd XI entered the Premier Division with an optimistic and established squad. Still being in the championship hunt with two fixtures left and finishing 4th with only three defeats can therefore be seen as a success. This was achieved through consistent team efforts rather than feats of individual brilliance, a fact reflected in no particular players having outstanding seasons. No batsmen scored in excess of 400 runs and no bowler took more than 30 wickets, which, if the next season is to be a good one, must improve in 2007. Steve Hale led the batting with 391 runs at 28 and David Gritton the bowling with 26 wickets at 22. Highlights included a miraculous late late victory at Normandy, Ed Matten's classy ton at home to Esher, Paul Towner's 7 wickets at Esher, the bowling of Bobby Iftikhar before being snaffled by the 1st team and the introduction of a few talented youngsters towards the end of the summer. Low-lights were a couple of drubbings by worthy champions Sunbury and other poor performances against Reigate and Weybridge, but all in all the season was highly enjoyable and played with good spirit by a group of great characters.
