Dulwich 2nd XI vs. Farncombe

Result: Dulwich Win

Dulwich 211-9 and Farncombe 151 all out

How do you do it? How do you lift the morale of your batsmen after they've performed so dismally over the previous two weeks? Win the toss, put yourselves in and make sure you score a total to bowl at. Good idea Shaq. Whilst never looking in total control, Dulwich showed a desire and resolution that had been missing since their run of 5 wins out of 5 had ended and eventually scored a challenging 211 off 50.5 overs. Dan Colquhoun looked as stylish as ever in his 55 off 51 balls, but it was Lawrence Bernhard that provided the innings glue as he patiently accumulated exactly 50 runs while others played cameos around him. Shame the innings ended with his being run out as opening bowler Jason Speer twisted his ankle flinging himself into the crease to preserve his wicket, while the ball was running Lawrence out at the other end. Ho hum...

So, how do you do it? How do you recover from losing one half of your new ball attack? Who cares. We've got David Gritton. He's been threatening it all season, in fact for a few seasons, but Dulwich's answer to Jimmy Anderson (with the ball, not the Barnet) finally took 6 wickets for the first time. First a nick to keeper Colquhoun, then a caught and bowled that the umpire was getting ready to signal as a boundary (Gritts nearly exploded in celebration!), then another, and another, and another in a first spell that set up the victory. It was only right that he should return at the end to clean up the stumps to claim personal best figures of 6-43 and get Dulwich back to winning ways. He's rightly earnt a place in the 1st XI next week. Let's hope neither he, or football-for-an-ankle Speer, are not too sorely missed.
