Dulwich 2nd XI vs. Old Wimbledonians
Result: Dulwich Win
Old Wimbledonians 137 all out and Dulwich 138-1
A comfortable 9
wicket home victory over Old Wimbledonians earnt Dulwich another
13 points and maintained their 100% record in the
Surrey Championship. At 45-1 off 15 overs, the away side had
given themselves a firm platform to build a decent total, but were
pegged
back by another quality performance with the ball by the Dulwich
attack. Despite consistently troubling the top order, openers
David Gritton and Jason Speer were only initially rewarded with
one early
wicket (a big inswinging carrot from Speer that induced an ill-advised
drive and subsequent loss of bails). In the following crucial
period, Kanak Patel, Steve Hale and Richard Beeching all served
up a meagre
diet of scoring opportunities to the batsmen. As their run-rate
dropped, Old Wimbledonians lost their cool and rewarded Hale
(1 for 5) and Beeching (1 for 19) with key wickets for their consistency.
This exposed a weak middle order and back came Gritton and Speer
- the perfect combination of youthful pace and exhuberance combined
with experienced wile, guile and powertool precision that earnt
David two scalps and Jason a Man of the Match 5 wicket haul.
Old
Wimbledonians were bowled out for 137 in the 55th over, maintaining
yet another 100% record as Dulwich claimed their 40th league
wicket of the season.
In reply, the difference in class was stamped home.
First ball of the innings was majestically thick-edged over cover
by Raj Tulsiani
for four before he and allrounder Hale commenced on an impressive
opening partnership of 91. 50 patient runs had been collected by
the 15th over, then Raj came to life, confidently striking the
ball into the neighbouring tennis courts twice in an over to bring
him his half-century off 78 balls. When Tulsiani was bowled round
his legs on 58, 'Rocket' Hale grabbed the baton with glee and reached
his 50 in similar style off only two more deliveries than Raj.
With Dan Calquhoun plundering 22 off a mere 17 balls at the other
end, Dulwich soon wrapped up victory. Skipper Shaq Farooqi was
once again delighted with his team's performance. "Once again,
I'm delighted," he said.
