Dulwich 2nd XI vs. Chessington
Result: Dulwich Win
Dulwich 216 for 8 wickets and Chessington 76 all out
A roller-coaster ride of an innings by John Acland-Hood in a fifth
wicket partnership with Russell Clayton became the foundation towards
success as Dulwich won in the rain at Chessington. Spilt more times
than Stewart Harmer’s eleventh pint of the evening, Acland-Hood
rode his luck and struck ten boundaries displaying an impressive
variety of shots through mid-on.
At the other end Clayton notched a measured 54 - an exercise
in patience, sound technique, aggressive running and tidy facial
hair. With a swift 48, opener Allen Blackford had got the Dulwich
innings off to a flyer. Just before a pig did actually fly past
astonished onlookers*, Blackford chased after a wide one and
not for the first time in his life, regretted it later! Declaring
on 216-8 off 50 overs skipper Shak Farooqi had to be happy with
his side’s batting.
Dulwich were equally impressive in the field. Six chances were
offered by Chessington and all six were taken - some feat in the
wind and rain. This included a Richard Purssell screamer, unleashed
from the bat at a pace that would have decapitated lesser mortals!
This was the first of four wickets for seamer Steve Hale who, along
with left arm spinner Richard Beeching, ripped the heart out of
Chessington’s batting. With eight wickets down and with only
a few overs left, Chessington had dug in for a point. Beeching
had lost his penetration but back came Hale to take his fourth
wicket with a sharp riser that tested keeper Blackford’s
agility and aging limbs.
Only three overs remained when opening bowler David Gritten returned
for his second spell. Cometh the hour, cometh the young man. Fired
up by a golden duck and a six ball opening spell, David ignored
the slippery conditions and tore in up the hill to shatter the
stumps to win the game.
It is now three wins out of three for top of the table Dulwich.
* OK, it was inflatable, but it was still a pig. Flying.
