Dulwich 1st XI vs. Wimbledon
Surrey Championship: Wimbledon (304-9
declared) drew with Dulwich 93-4
As rain swept around the Surrey cricket clubs, Dulwich and Wimbledon
had to settle for a draw. The recent pattern of Dulwich making
early inroads into the top order batsmen was repeated when the
Wimbledon middle order batted their team into a safe total for
declaration. A draw for Wimbledon and Dulwich kept the two bottom
teams at a distance.
Wimbledon chose to bat first and lost two early wickets to Mark
Kelly (in his first over) and to Kervin Marc (in his third over)
leaving the Dons at 11-2. John Rowlands and David Brown took the
total to 36 in the thirteenth over whereupon David Gritton celebrated
his promotion to the first team by dismissing Brown for 18. The
young speedster picked up a second wicket in his fifth over to
make Wimbledon 48-4 in the nineteenth over.
Sean Davies joined
Rowland in a stand of 33 as Dulwich turned to spin bowling. Rowland
fell to left armer Vikram Banerjee for a gritty 28 as Wimbledon
took lunch at a precarious 101-5 off 35 overs.
After the interval Sean Davies took control and with the help
of David Jarvis added 107 for the sixth wicket before Jarvis fell
to Banerjee for 38. The Former Zimbabwean international went on
to his century but soon afterwards was well caught on the boundary
by Graeme Hough for 105 with the score at 225. Davies had scored
a century in his only other appearance for Wimbledon this season.
Wimbledon seemed intent on making the game safe and continued
to bat on. Rory Lavery made 42 not out off 32 balls spearheading
the acquisition of 79 off the last ten overs. Debutant Gritton
returned the best figures taking 3-45 while Marc, Banerjee and
Kelly grabbed two wickets each.
Wimbledon had batted out their full entitlement of 66 overs to
finish on 304-9. In reply Darrel Brown and Anil Mahey started confidently
putting on 35 in just eight overs before Brown was dismissed by
South African Will Hantan for 21. Local boy, Mahey and the skipper,
Richard Farrow continued the run chase putting on 58 together as
Dulwich reached 93 after 24 overs.
As the storm clouds gathered,
Hantan intervened dramatically dismissing Farrow for 21, Jack Lusk
and Mark Kelly – both lbw first ball. Hanton's hat
trick was the last play as the rain poured down to end the proceedings.
Wimbledon took four points for a winning draw and Dulwich's
single point was negated as they were deducted a point for a slow
over rate. The Dulwich pace bowlers could only look at 11 no balls
and 12 wides to see where they had forfeited the point.
