Dulwich 1st XI vs. Esher
Surrey Championship: Esher (228 -8 declared) beat Dulwich
220 all out by 8 runs
Dulwich travelled to high flying Esher and despite a plucky performance
lost by eight runs in a nail biting finish.
Richard Farrow, the Dulwich skipper won the toss and put second
placed Esher into bat. His decision seemed an interesting one as
the openers Sohail Ahmed and current Surrey player, James Knott
piled on the runs in a century opening stand. Their partnership
was eventually broken as Vikram Bannerji plied his slow left arm
spin to remove Knott for 64 just before lunch and then Ahmed for
54. Bannerji playing his third game for Dulwich formed a spin partnership
with Graeme Hough.
Off spinner Hough bowled as usual with a tight
line but it was Bannerji who took the wickets. Although Ben Potter
stayed for some time for 21, it was the experienced Derek Lane
who nursed the Esher score to 228-8 to enable a declaration after
62 overs. Bannerji bowled 21 overs yielding a return of six wickets
for 75. His spin twin Hough ended the day with twenty four overs
and sixty four runs for no wicket. The pitch did not appear to
help the pacemen as Mark Kelly took 1-33 and Dave Burton, previously
very much in form was wicketless in just six overs.
With 229 to win, Dulwich were in good heart as West Indian international,
Darrel Brown and Anil Mahey took the game to Esher. Although Brown
departed, falling lbw to opening bowler, Aidan Baker for 13, Farrow
joined Mahey to push Dulwich forward. With the score passing 100
for just one wicket, Dulwich looked well set but Mahey fell one
short of his second fifty in the championship.
Jack Lusk, the vice
captain strode to the crease and quickly made 23 runs before
he was adjudged lbw. Dulwich had been going well and had victory
in their sights but that lbw decision seemed to unhinge the batting
as McDonagh (3) and Kelly (5) soon departed.
Bannerji and Burton made useful contributions as Farrow moved
the Dulwich score closer and closer towards the target. The Pakistani
state player, Sohail Ahmed was brought back to remove the tail – taking
the last four wickets to return a creditable 5-70. Farrow, the
Dulwich captain was left undefeated on 61 -a tantalising eight
runs short.
Dulwich had set their stall out to win and justify
their enterprising approach, however a middle order batting collapse
had cost them the opportunity of victory.
