Saturday 16th July 2005
Dulwich 1st XI vs. Spencer

Surrey Championship: Spencer 275-9 declared beat Dulwich 161 by 114 runs

Dulwich got off to an encouraging start at Spencer in on Saturday and were well on top in the morning session but the match was taken away from them by a superb innings by Baqar Rizvi and they eventually succumbed to a 114 run defeat.

Winning the toss, Dulwich elected to field and David Burton struck in his first over to dismiss Tom Askew without scoring. Mark Kelly followed up with two wickets in his next two overs dismissing former county players Imran Mohammed and David Thompson. Vikram Kumar and Paul Askew resisted further fine bowling by Burton and Kelly until Askew was dismissed by Kelly in the nineteenth over with the score on 43.

New boy Vikram Bannerji was brought on and dismissed Kumar for 20 which had come from 81 balls with the score on 65. Baqar Rizvi and Khawer Saleem stayed together until lunch taking the score to 98 -4 off 36 overs at lunch. After lunch the game dramatically changed as Rizvi took the Dulwich bowling apart reaching 50 off 60 balls and then racing to his 100 off only 22 more.

Saleem’s share of a stand of 120 was just 21 runs. Rizvi eventually fell to off-spinner Graeme Hough for 125 made off only 101 balls helped take the score 275-9 declared off 66 overs. Hough finished with a creditable 3-70 off 17 overs.

Darrel Brown started off Dulwich’s reply in a most positive manner scoring 47 at a run a ball before being first out at 71 in the 14 th over. Anil Mahey and Vikram Bannerji soon followed as Dulwich went into tea at 93-3 off 18 overs. After the interval the Spencer spinners Imraan Mohammed and Rizvi gradually worked through the middle order to reduce Dulwich to 120-6.

Skipper Richard Farrow and Stefan Boss sought to stop the rot and attempted to bat out time. They survived for thirteen overs without alarm until Boss fell to a bizarre run out for 10. Dulwich College schoolboy, Braithwaite was brought back and he quickly dismissed Burton and then claimed the last wicket of Farrow for a fighting 47. Braithwaite returning figures of 4-49, with Mohammed 3-34 and Rizvi taking 2-28 as Dulwich were all out for 161.
