Dulwich 1st XI vs. Spencer
Surrey Championship: Spencer 275-9
declared beat Dulwich 161 by 114 runs
Dulwich got off to an encouraging start at Spencer in on Saturday
and were well on top in the morning session but the match was taken
away from them by a superb innings by Baqar Rizvi and they eventually
succumbed to a 114 run defeat.
Winning the toss, Dulwich elected to field and David Burton struck
in his first over to dismiss Tom Askew without scoring. Mark Kelly
followed up with two wickets in his next two overs dismissing former
county players Imran Mohammed and David Thompson. Vikram Kumar
and Paul Askew resisted further fine bowling by Burton and Kelly
until Askew was dismissed by Kelly in the nineteenth over with
the score on 43.
New boy Vikram Bannerji was brought on and dismissed Kumar for
20 which had come from 81 balls with the score on 65. Baqar Rizvi
and Khawer Saleem stayed together until lunch taking the score
to 98 -4 off 36 overs at lunch. After lunch the game dramatically
changed as Rizvi took the Dulwich bowling apart reaching 50 off
60 balls and then racing to his 100 off only 22 more.
Saleem’s
share of a stand of 120 was just 21 runs. Rizvi eventually fell
to off-spinner Graeme Hough for 125 made off only 101 balls helped
take the score 275-9 declared off 66 overs. Hough finished with
a creditable 3-70 off 17 overs.
Darrel Brown started off Dulwich’s reply in a most positive
manner scoring 47 at a run a ball before being first out at 71
in the 14 th over. Anil Mahey and Vikram Bannerji soon followed
as Dulwich went into tea at 93-3 off 18 overs. After the interval
the Spencer spinners Imraan Mohammed and Rizvi gradually worked
through the middle order to reduce Dulwich to 120-6.
Skipper Richard
Farrow and Stefan Boss sought to stop the rot and attempted to
bat out time. They survived for thirteen overs without alarm
until Boss fell to a bizarre run out for 10. Dulwich College schoolboy,
Braithwaite was brought back and he quickly dismissed Burton
and then claimed the last wicket of Farrow for a fighting 47. Braithwaite
returning figures of 4-49, with Mohammed 3-34 and Rizvi taking
2-28 as Dulwich were all out for 161.
