Dulwich 1st XI vs. Spencer
Surrey Championship: Spencer 166 all out lost to Dulwich
(167-6) by four wickets
A superb spell of quick bowling by Dave Burton set Dulwich up
for a four wicket victory in their crucial relegation clash against
bottom club Spencer.
Dulwich skipper, Richard Farrow won the toss and put Spencer
into bat in challenging conditions conducive to swing and seam.
Spencer got off to a shaky start as Burton struck in his first
over dismissing Khawar Saker for a duck. Tom Askew and Vikram Kumar
took the score to 31 after eleven overs when dismissing former
Cambridge University batsman for 19. Burton’s next over saw
skipper Imraan Mohammed out for 1, his brother Salman for no score
and Baqa Rizvi also out for a duck. Burton’s triple wicket
maiden gave him figures of seven overs, five maidens with five
wickets for just six runs.
Askew and keeper Neil Baker stabilised the Spencer innings and
together they added 69 for the sixth wicket in 20 overs before
Askew fell to Adam McDonagh for a dogged 29. Baker went on to make
56 and was given good support by Dulwich College schoolboy Ruel
Braithwaite, who was last out for 33 as Spencer were dismissed
for 166 in the 55 th over. Sussex triallist Dave Burton finished
with 6-24 off fourteen overs, while Adam McDonagh returned 2-50
and off spinner Graeme Hough celebrated his return from injury
with 2-35.
Darryl Brown and Anil Mahey found scoring equally difficult when
Dulwich launched their reply, managing only one scoring shot in
the first six overs. Mahey was out for 12 with the score on 31
off twelve overs and was replaced by Steve Hale. The partnership
took Dulwich to tea at a comfortable 89-1 after 26 overs. The first
ball after the interval brought a setback as Brown was dismissed
for 51 and Hale also went for 12 without adding to his tea time
score. Jack Lusk was in an ebullient mood as he struck five of
his first seven balls for four but was dismissed for 27 and Farrow
followed for 6 leaving Dulwich on 128-5.
Adam McDonagh responded by hitting two fours in his first three
balls and with Mark Kelly inched their way towards the target.
The pair added 35 in ten overs before McDonagh was dismissed for
12. Kelly finished on 23 not out as Dulwich gained a crucial victory
against their neighbours.
