Dulwich 1st XI vs. Malden Wanderers
Surrey Championship: Malden Wanderers (225) defeated Dulwich
(194) by 31 runs
Despite giving a much improved all-round performance, Dulwich
slipped to a narrow defeat at home to Malden Wanderers last Saturday.
Richard Farrow’s side were just nine balls away from a creditable
draw when Malden match-winner Brendan O’Connell grabbed the
last Dulwich wicket, his eighth of the innings.
The visitors elected to bat first but were soon reeling at 31
for 4 as Dulwich’s new-ball attack struck early blows. Kervin
Marc removed O’Connell in the first over of the morning,
next Mark Kelly dismissed Ritchie Bann and Stewart Walters, then
Dave Burton had Dan Euston caught behind. Malden’s middle
order rallied, however, with Reyno Norvall and Jon Albert adding
121 for the fifth wicket before Albert was caught off Darrel Brown
for 41.
Norvall then found another useful ally in Sean Byrne and
together they took the score to 193 before Norvall was stumped
just six runs short of a deserved century. Byrne went on to make
35 before falling victim to left-arm spinner Vikram Banerjee
who made short work of the Malden tail and finished with 4-70 from
19.2 overs. Of the other Dulwich bowlers, Brown took 2-41 and
Kelly 2-63.
Requiring 226 to win, Dulwich made a slow but steady start before
losing skipper Farrow with the total on 24. Anil Mahey and Jack
Lusk advanced the score to 84 before left-arm spinner O’Connell
struck for the first time, having Mahey caught at slip for 17.
Lusk reached his third fifty in six Championship innings, but his
dismissal off O’Connell for a fine 55 proved decisive. The
very next ball O’Connell claimed the wicket of Steve Hale,
returning after injury, and Dulwich were reduced to 97 for 4. Brown
(40) and Kelly (23) then steadied the ship and Banerjee, Marc and
Adam McDonogh lent support as Dulwich approached their target,
although a draw appeared the probable outcome.
O’Connell
had other ideas, however, and taking wickets at regular intervals
he eventually dismissed McDonogh in the penultimate over to earn
Malden a 31-run victory. O’Connell’s final figures
were 8 for 69 off 22.3 overs.
