Dulwich 1st XI vs. Farnham
Farnham (281-8 declared) beat Dulwich (130
all out) by 151 runs.
Dulwich crashed to a 151 run defeat away to fellow strugglers
Farnham in the Surrey Championship Premier League game on Saturday.
The home side won the toss and elected to bat first on a damp
pitch where scoring seemed difficult. Openers Alan Thorpe and Tom
Caines were subjected to a probing new ball spell by Kervin Marc
and Mark Kelly with only 31 runs coming off the first 18 overs.
The pair survived and continued their partnership to 70 in 27 overs
before Thorpe was dismissed by left arm spinner Richard Beeching.
Thorpe had made a pain staking 17 off 82 balls. His partner Caines
took 24 balls to make his first run and was dropped early on, went
on to make 65 from 122 balls before also falling to Beeching. The
lunch break saw the game evenly poised with Farnham 95 -1 but in
the afternoon sun the Farnham batsmen prospered. Guy Hicks with
41 off 67 balls and Nick Whitworth with 53 off 65 upped the momentum
so that the middle order could dominate.
Gary Clapham attacked
the Dulwich bowling with 42 off 32 balls, skipper Tom Hicks made
21 off 14 and 17 year old Mark-Anthony Eysele struck 25 off 12
balls. The afternoon onslaught took Farnham to 281 with eight wickets
down – Richard Beeching taking a creditable 2-52 after stepping
up from the Dulwich 2 nd X1 while Dave Burton never stopped plugging
away to return 5-100.
In reply the Farnham bowlers exploited a deteriorating pitch
with Peter Dickinson and Rupert Kitzinger opening up. Kitzinger
made some good `length balls lift alarmingly and aided by some
poor shot selection from Dulwich batsmen, the visitors were reduced
to 58 -7 at tea. The Dulwich batting had been blown away with only
Jack Lusk (19) and Mark Kelly in double figures.
The eighth Dulwich
wicket fell in the first over after tea and Mark Kelly changed
his game. His change of gear to attacking mode saw him score 66
runs in the first 44 balls after tea – taking his score to
77. Kelly was aided by stubborn resistance from keeper, Eugene
Strange. In their partnership Kelly scored all 21 runs and then
finally he was joined by Beeching who stayed with him as they added
51 together – 45 scored by Kelly.
As Dulwich trooped off
Farnham could celebrate as Kitzinger ended with 5-39 off 16 overs
and Dickinson 3-34 off 11 overs- even more remarkable as he was
handicapped by an ankle injury sustained in practice before the
game.
