Dulwich 1st XI vs. Normandy
Dulwich (149 all out) lost to Normandy (150 -5) by five
wickets.
Newly promoted Dulwich got off to a disappointing start to their
first game in the Premiership of the Surrey Championship on Saturday
by losing to Normandy (who finished fifth last year) by five wickets.
The match certainly did see saw between the two teams but Normandy's
greater experience saw them home.
Winning the toss, Dulwich elected to bat and got off to a steady
start as Richard Farrow and Steve Hale added 36 before Hale was
given out lbw for 14. Skipper Farrow was joined by in -form batsman,
Jack Lusk and together they took the score to 63 after twenty overs
before Farrow was dismissed for 26. Lusk was joined by Mark Kelly
who made ten runs before being dismissed just before lunch with
a mistimed drive. Adam McDonagh survived the pre-lunch attack and
at 93 for 3 Dulwich looked well set.
After lunch Dulwich advanced to 116 before McDonagh's dismissal
precipitated a collapse in which four wickets fell for just six
runs in seven overs including Jack Lusk who contributed a gritty
54. With the middle order blown away, a still confident Anil Mahey
with 17 shepherded the lower order batsmen to 149 all out off 59
overs. Normandy's medium pacer Chris Cornell taking 4-34 while
left arm spinner Mahboob Elahi had a crucial 3-36 off nineteen
overs and Junior Simpson weighed in with 3-43.
In reply Dulwich fought back strongly with Kervin Marc taking
the first wicket in the seventh over and Mark Kelly snapped up
two wickets (both lbw) to have Normandy reeling at 16 for three
wickets. Bobby Howell and Howard Grice survived testing spells
first by Kelly and first change quick bowler, Dave Burton followed
by a stiff examination from medium pacer, Adam McDonagh and off
spinner, Graeme Hough. As Normandy consolidated, the total moved
to 75 before Anil Mahey's leg spin accounted for Grice who made
a fighting 33. Howell reached his first fifty for the first team
and took his score to 60 before McDonagh accounted for him lbw.
The win for Normandy was secured by Elahi whose innings of 33 saw
some lusty blows at just the right stage of the game. Of the Dulwich
bowlers Kelly returned a creditable and attacking 2-28 off ten
overs while McDonagh took 1-11 and Hough put in his usual accurate
spell conceding only 11 runs off eight overs.
Farrow's men next take on champions Weybridge at home on Saturday
and with some lessons learnt should enjoy their first season in
the Castle Surrey Championship Premier Division.
