Dulwich 1st XI vs. Camberley
Camberley 202-6 (60 overs) beat Dulwich 103 all out (36.4 overs)
For the third consecutive season, Dulwich achieved promotion
as champions of their league, and in 2005 will be playing in the
Premier League of the Castle Lager Surrey Championship as the club
returns to the top flight. Dulwich went into the match already
knowing that they had secured promotion, but as their nearest rivals
Farnham also lost, to the Bank of England, the result of the game
did not matter in the end. Just as well, for the team stumbled
to their third defeat of the season.
Put in to bat, Camberley found scoring difficult against a superb
opening spell from Mark Kelly and former Surrey star Mark Kenlock.
The openers conceded just 36 runs in the first 24 overs, with Kelly
picking up two crucial wickets. Alistair Storey and Jim Chaplin
prevented any further breakthrough and gradually accelerated the
scoring rate. Their stand was worth 114 before Kenlock returned
to dismiss Chaplin for 53. Storey went on to score 76 before eventually
being dismissed by Kelly in the penul tim ate over. Kelly finished
with four for 55, and Kenlock two for 50 as Camberley closed on
202 for six after 60 overs.
In reply, Dulwich failed to follow Camberley’s example
against a testing opening spell by Gary Udal and skipper Janusc
Kaminski. Skipper Richard Farrow was dismissed in the third over,
and the remaining top-order batsmen tried to force the pace, losing
wickets in the process. Nine wickets had fallen for 78, with Steve
Hale the top scorer on 18, before Jack Lusk was joined by veteran
Graeme Hough.
Together they put on 25, taking the score to 103,
before Lusk was dismissed for a defiant 39. Six of the Dulwich
wickets were given out LBW. Udal, brother of the Hampshire and
former England one-day all-rounder Shaun, took four for 43, while
Kaminki had figures of three for 8.
It might have been a disappointing
day, but Dulwich could look back with pride on a season where
they have already won 11 matches and once again could enjoy a
championship celebration.
