Dulwich 1st XI vs. Cheam
Dulwich (198 all out) beat Cheam (173 all out) by 25 runs
A fine all round team performance took Division One leaders Dulwich
to a 25 run win away to Cheam, thus securing promotion for the
third consecutive season. Dulwich will be playing Premiership cricket
next season along with nine other teams – the top league
in the county of Surrey .
Put into bat Dulwich got off to a disappointing start losing
their first wicket in the second over. Cheam’s Jamie Barrow
bowled a testing opening spell taking 3 wickets for 25 runs however
runs flowed freely at the other end. Career civil servant, Steve
Hale held the Dulwich innings together with stands of 39 with Mark
Kelly, 28 with Jack Lusk and 16 with Ray Tudor. As the fourth Dulwich
wicket fell the visitors were precariously poised at 88 although
only twenty overs had been bowled.
The Cheam spinners, Terry Howes and Mark Burns slowed the scoring
appreciably but the enterprising Hale was joined by Stuart Ferguson
and they gradually took command putting on 50 for the fifth wicket
in eighteen overs. Three Dulwich wickets fell in consecutive overs
with Ferguson being dismissed for 24 and Hale for an important
75. The Dulwich tail wagged as Adam McDonagh added 30 off 33 balls,
well supported by keeper Eugene Strange with 15. As the last wicket
fell Dulwich had reached 198 all out.
Cheam got off to a calamitous start as the prolific Gary Martin
was out to the first ball of the innings and the second Cheam wicket
fell in the third over – both to Mark Kelly. The Dulwich
openers made a lively pair as Mark Kenlock grabbed a third wicket
in the 12 th over with only 22 on the board. Cheam skipper Simon
Hawk was joined by James Garner and together they saw off the opening
pair and resisted probing spells by off spinners Tanuj Sud and
Graeme Hough. At 97-3 off 36 overs Cheam needed 102 to win off
twenty overs and the game seemed poised for an exciting finish.
Skipper Farrow called up Adam McDonagh and the South African
born quickie grabbed two wickets in his first over. Wily off spinner
Hough accounted for Hawk for 63 in the 44 th over but Cheam needing
a win to escape the relegation zone continued to press for runs.
Kelly and Kenlock were recalled to the attack as Dulwich fought
for a break through and the former Surrey left armer Kenlock obliged
with a wicket in his first over. The next two wickets fell to splendid
out fielding as New Zealander Jack Lusk made two direct hits to
run Cheam batsmen out! Kenlock weighed in with the last wicket
to secure Dulwich a vital win and secure promotion with 2.3 overs
remaining.
As the Dulwich players celebrated Richard Farrow reminded his
troops that Dulwich now require one more win from their last two
games to win the Division One championship. Next week table Dulwich
entertain Camberley in the First Division of the Surrey Championship
sponsored by Castle Lager.
