Dulwich 1st XI vs. Sunbury
Dulwich 279-7 wickets declared had a winning draw with Sunbury
228-8 wickets.
Second placed Dulwich were unable to force victory against third
placed Sunbury and had to settle for a winning draw in their top
of the table clash in the Surrey Championship Division One. Put
into bat, Dulwich lost their first wicket with the score on 8.
Steve Hale was then joined by Mike George in a stand of 158 for
the second wicket. The pair scored steadily at 5 an over as Dulwich
reached 50 in the tenth over, 100 in the 2oth and 150 in the thirtieth.
Hale was dismissed for 73 made off only 94 balls in his first appearance
of the season for the first team. Soon after George reached his
fourth 50 of the campaign and finally made 82 off 114. The Aussie
school teacher has so far scored 389 runs at an average of over
47.
After the dismissal of Mike George, the Dulwich tempo slowed
with just 17 runs off eight overs before a rousing stand of 46
in nine overs between Lusk and Ferguson . Jack Lusk departed with
38, Stuart Ferguson 17 and Adam McDonagh added a blistering 31
not out off 18 balls. Skipper Farrow was able to declare at 279
for seven wickets off sixty overs challenging Sunbury to score
at five and a half to win!
Openers Richard Gould and Neil Farnsworth were unable to force
the pace against a testing opening spell from Mark Kelly and Adam
McDonagh and the pair took until the fifteenth over to reach 50.
Their stand was worth 84before Tanuj Sud had Farnsworth lbw for
38. Acceleration was provided by New Zealander, Mark Gillespie
who joined Gould in a third wicket stand of 65 in ten overs taking
Sunbury to 163. Sud was able to account for both of them, dismissing
Gould for 69 and Gillespie for a hard hitting 52 off 47 balls.
Stuart Ferguson picked up the fifth wicket but Sunbury had progressed
to 209 before Kelly returned to take two wickets in successive
overs. Sud took his fifth wicket to leave Sunbury precariously
placed on 212 for 8.
Sunbury skipper, Mark Todd and John Irons then batted out the
last eight overs making no effort to reach 242 and the winning
draw. The Sunbury innings closed on 228 -8. Sud finished with five
wickets for 73 – his second five wicket haul for the season
as he reached a total of twenty wickets for the season. Dulwich’s
winning draw extended their lead over third placed Sunbury to twenty
six points and next Saturday Dulwich entertain the Bank of England
in the First Division of the Surrey Championship sponsored by Castle
Lager.
