Dulwich 1st XI vs. Purley
Purley 237-9 declared and Dulwich 121 for 8 wickets
Division two leaders Dulwich are now assured of promotion to Division
One as they drew their game with Purley on Saturday as third placed
Metropolitan Police and fourth placed Horsley & Send both lost.
The match was dominated by a superb all round performance by Purley’s
overseas player Luke Woodcock who scored an unbeaten century and
took six wickets for fifty seven runs. Purley stated confidently
putting on 27 for the first wicket before Mark Kelly struck with
the last ball of the seventh over. Kelly and Stuart Ferguson then
applied the pressure conceding only 13 runs off the next thirteen
overs and taking a wicket apiece.
Spinners Ty Hopes and Graeme Hough maintained the pressure as
Hopes struck twice in successive overs to reduce Purley to 72 for
five in the thirtieth over. The innings was then transformed by
Ali who slammed 74 off 50 balls and shared a sixth wicket stand
of 105 in seventeen overs with Woodcock. The opener having required
126 balls for his first fifty, and then dominated the scoring racing
to his second 50 off only 42 balls in the boiling sunshine. Purley
declared as soon as he reached his 100 with the score on 237-9
off 53 overs. Kelly was the most successful Dulwich bowler with
four wickets for 65 taking his total for the season to 46 wickets.
Dulwich got off to a shaky start losing Raj Tulsiani in the second
over. Richard Farrow and Ty Hopes found scoring difficult but stayed
together to put on 43 for the second wicket in just nineteen overs,
their fifth successive partnership of 40 or more. The loss of both
of these batsmen plus the prolific Jack Lusk in the space of four
overs put Dulwich into trouble at 59 -4. Woodcock extracted increasing
turn with his left arm spin but Dulwich were steered to safety
by an assured innings of 48 by Ray Tudor in only 71 balls. He was
dismissed off the last ball of the penultimate over leaving Lawrence
Bernhard and Eugene Strange to negotiate the draw.
News of their promotion sealed a successful day for the Dulwich
club as the second and third eleven both defeated their Purley
counterparts. The second eleven moved into second place in Division
Two while the third team took top place in Division One.
