Saturday 2nd August 2003
Dulwich 1st XI vs. Ashtead

Ashtead 185-9 declared and Dulwich 168 all out

Division two leaders Dulwich suffered their first defeat of the season away to Ashtead but are still comfortably placed at the head of the table with a forty six point margin.

Ashtead elected to bat and started confidently against attacking bowling by Mark Kelly and tight bowling from David Gritton, who conceded only 18 runs in his first seven overs. Two wickets from Kelly reduced Ashtead to 51 for 2 wickets but a third wicket stand of 56 in 12.3 overs saw them well placed on 107 for 2 after 27 overs.

Two wickets then fell in successive overs to spinners Ty Hopes and Graeme Hough who then exerted increasing pressure to concede only 33 overs off the next fifteen overs taking a wicket apiece. Hough bowled twenty overs unchanged to finish with 4 for 31 and has now taken 25 wickets at an average of 12.9. Ashtead finished on 185-9 after their 55 overs.

Raj Tulsiani got the Dulwich innings off to a hectic start with 4 fours in an innings of 16 in just 9 balls. Skipper Richard Farrow was then joined by West Australian Hopes and together they added 73 off 17 overs before Hopes was bowled for 31, all but one run coming in boundaries!

The return of Ashtead’s New Zealander Brandon Hiini, who had been wicket less in his first spell, had an immediate effect with two wickets in an over. One of his victims was Farrow who had made 54. This was his seventh fifty in fourteen innings and takes his aggregate to 586 at an average of 41.8

Dulwich wickets continued to fall steadily to a combination of good bowling and poor shots. Only Hough batted steadily making 24 before being dismissed by a remarkable diving catch by Ashtead’s substitute fielder. Dulwich were dismissed for 168 to lose by 17 runs. Hiini took 6 for 27 in his second spell finishing with match figures of 6 for 46

Top of the table, Dulwich entertain Purley at home in the Castle Lager Surrey Championship next week. They require just one more to secure promotion whilst second placed Camberley meet third placed Metropolitan Police.
