Dulwich First X1

Saturday 29th July 2006:

Dulwich 198 all out (61 overs) beat Malden Wanderers 157 all out (49.5 overs) by 41 runs

Better application when batting and superior catching saw Dulwich to a 41 run victory over bottom placed Malden Wanderers.

Dulwich chose to bat on a difficult pitch and lost Jimmy Daley for 3 in the fourth over. Anil Mahey and Richard Farrow were forced to graft for their runs against Neil Mander and Mike Cotterill. The pair had taken the score to 40 after 16 overs when Farrow was lbw for 24. Mahey and Dai Williams added 47 for the third wicket in twelve overs when Mahey lost patience and was bowled for a dogged 30.

Williams proceeded to his fifty in a stand of 46 with his skipper Mark Kelly but both were out shortly afterwards, Williams, the Loughborough student making 53 off 87 balls. Dave Burton opted for attack and smashed 20 at a run a ball. Sunny Singh with 12 and Graeme Hough, 13 saw the score to 194 -6 whereupon the spinners Jon Albert and Giles Puckle finished the Dulwich innings. They took the last four wickets in three overs to dismiss Dulwich for a fighting 198.

Malden’s batsmen failed to show the same application in reply as the first five wickets fell for 69 in only seventeen overs. Arshad Iftikhar picked up the first two in a spell of 2-14 in eight overs, while Burton claimed the next three. Dave Gorrod, the Surrey coach at the Oval opted for counter attack and took advantage of some short pitched bowling from his academy colleague, Dave Burton, hitting him for 32 in his last four overs. Sean Byrne helped Gorrod add 54 in fourteen overs for the sixth wicket before Byrne was caught behind off Vikram Banerjee for 12. Spinners Banerjee and Hough restored some order with only two runs coming from their first six overs in tandem. Banerjee dismissed visiting skipper, Puckle for 13 and in the next over the wily Hough bowled Gorrod for 46. They took one more each to dismiss Malden for 157with nine overs to spare. Slow left armer, Banerjee finished with 3-24 off 14.5 overs and Hough took 2-15 off ten overs. Burton’s spell of fifteen overs brought him 3-79.

Dulwich’s win restored them back to fifth place in the league with a small gap between them and the struggling pack. The league shows every chance of continuing to build towards a real climax as most sides seem to have the ability to beat each other. Next week Dulwich entertain third placed Farnham in the Premier League of the Shepherd Neame sponsored Surrey Championship.
