Dulwich First X1

Saturday 8th July 2006:

Guildford 210 all out (64.3 overs) lost to Dulwich 211-3 (48.5 overs) by seven wickets

Dulwich continued their winning run with a confident home win against newly promoted Guildford by seven wickets. Dulwich skipper, Mark Kelly won the toss and inserted the visitors  and was soon rewarded with a couple of wickets. Opening bowlers Dave Burton and Arshad Iftikhar kept the batsmen quiet in their opening spell before Iftikhar struck to remove Skidmore and Hollingsworth to reduce Guildford to 37 for 2. Iftikhar continued to bowl well and shortly afterwards had Young well caught by Ryan Birbeck for an enterprising 32 with Guildford 52 -3.

Cambridge Blue, Vikram Banerjee was introduced to the attack and within a few overs dismissed Thompson for 11 as Iftikhar continued his sixteen over spell unchanged.  Just before lunch Iftikhar claimed his fourth wicket getting Guildford’s overseas player,  Matapuna caught behind for 42. Lunch was taken with Guilford on 125 for 5 after 32 overs.

Immediately after lunch Burton struck to remove Skidmore leaving Sabey to battle on with the tail. Off spinner Sunny Singh was brought on and he was able to remove Guildford keeper, Cruz caught behind with Birbeck claiming his fourth victim at 156. One run later Sabey was on his way out after a hard fought 47 – lbw to Singh.

The tail continued to resist until Burton removed the visiting skipper, Walter for a gritty 9 at 183.  The last pair of Brett and Kalam fought hard and took the occasional boundary until Sigh was able to catch Kalam off his own bowling for 12, leaving Brett undefeated on 24 as Guildford were all out for 210 in the 65th over.

A tired but happy, Iftikhar led the fielding team off with his four wickets for 54, Singh had added good support with 3-44 and Burton 2-49. Banerjee was a little unlucky with 1-57 off eighteen overs but the highlight was eight catches by the young Dulwich team.

The Dulwich response was led by James Daley and Anil Mahey who started confidently adding 55 for the first wicket. Mahey fell to Young with a lazy shot caught by Hollingsworth. Former Durham County batsman, continued to build his innings as Farrow joined him at the crease. Last week’s two hundred partnership was not to be repeated as Farrow was lbw for 10 at 72. Daley was not deterred as he moved serenely to a fifty ably supported by Loughborough student Dai Williams.

The Dulwich pair dove tailed together well as the Guildford skipper tried a variety of bowlers – using eight in all during the Dulwich innings. Walter’s frustration was evident as Daley cruised to his second successive Championship century before being caught by Hollingsworth with just twelve runs required. Williams was able to celebrate his first fifty for Dulwich before steering the innings to 211 for the loss of just three wickets and with eight overs to spare.

A second successive emphatic win lifts Dulwich into mid table to fifth place. A testing game at second placed Reigate lies ahead next week in the Premier League of the Shepherd Neame sponsored Surrey Championship.
