Dulwich First X1

Saturday 21st July 2007:

In a match abandoned: Cobham Avorians  223-9 declared (48.3 overs) and Dulwich 48-6 (16.3 overs)

Dulwich collapsed to 48-6 in reply to 223-9 in their Surrey Championship Premier Division match at home to Cobham Avorians but the rain had the final say as the match was abandoned.

Dulwich skipper Mark Kelly won the toss for the first time this season and chose to field. Australian international Mark Higgs, who made 95 in the first game between the sides was equally dominant on Saturday and had reached 71 out of 125-3 when the first rain interruption occurred in the 27th over. 110 minutes of play were lost before the match could be resumed with the Avorians innings reduced to a maximum of 51 overs. Leg spinner Zoheb Sharif struck in his first over after the resumption, catching Higgs off his own bowling. The Aussie had made 72 off 92 balls.

Sharif and leg spinner Raza Ali Dar bowled unchanged for the rest of the innings. Sharif had picked up the wicket of former Essex captain, Paul Pritchard and finished with 4-45 off 15 overs. The highlights for the Avorians were Stuart Naylor with 49 off 72 balls and Ben Kingsworth whose 18 came off 39 balls as they added 51 for the sixth wicket and Andy Umpleby who smashed 25 off 17 balls to take his side to a declaration at the fall of the ninth wicket at 223.

Dulwich were left with 40 overs to get 224 to win or 184 for a winning draw. Their reply was interrupted in the fourth over by a shower which freshened up the wicket and made batting difficult. Scott Jarvis used the conditions superbly to claim the first six wickets. Dulwich had collapsed to 48-6 in the seventeenth over when another downfall of rain brought the match to an end. Dulwich had made a promising start as Steve Hale scored 20 of the first 25 runs in only 27 balls with Phil Chandler who remained 17 not out off 30 balls. They were the only batsmen to score more than four runs. Jarvis finished with 6-25 off 8.3 overs.

The game was abandoned as the second innings required twenty overs to be bowled and Dulwich were left with their third abandoned game in eleven league games this season. Given their parlous position, Dulwich need to play some games and win! On Saturday they entertain second placed Normandy in the Shepherd Neame sponsored Surrey Championship Premier League.
