Dulwich First X1

Saturday 9th June 2007:

Dulwich 248 for 6 wickets declared (66 overs) beat Wimbledon 129 all out (38.4 overs) by 119 runs

A patient century by Zoheb Sharif, well supported by a fine all round performance by Raza Ali Dar and a devastating opening spell by Tom Savill, saw Dulwich to a convincing 119 run win in their Surrey Championship Premier Division match at Wimbledon.

Put in to bat, Dulwich lost Phil Chandler, playing his first game of the season, for 3 with the score on 11. Sharif and Thompson then consolidated against accurate bowling putting on 62 for the second wicket. Thompson’s dismissal for 21 brought in Dar and Dulwich went into lunch at 75-2 off 33 overs.  After the interval Sharif and Dar increased the tempo taking their stand to 101 at five an over. Dar went for 48 off 78 balls and skipper, Mark Kelly fell soon after for 5. Sharif reached his maiden century for Dulwich and was finally dismissed for 106 off 166 balls. A cameo innings by the vice captain Farrow and some lusty blows by Burton helped take his side to 248-6 off their 66 overs.

The Wimbledon innings got off to a catastrophic start when Savill, bowling fast and straight, claimed four wickets for 13 runs in seven overs – one bowled and three lbws. Wimbledon went into tea reeling on 42-4 after fourteen overs. Aussie John Hastings with 21 and former Northants batsman Jon Wileman (25) offered some resistance but Wileman’s dismissal at 81 sparked a collapse as spinners Dar and Sharif shared four wickets for 13 runs in four overs.

A spirited 27 off 21 balls by last man Willie Moolman delayed the inevitable. However Dar struck again and the home side were all out for 129 to give Dulwich a very satisfying win. Sharif added to his ton with two wickets for 33, while Dar who bore the brunt of Moolman’s hitting took 4-55 off 12.4 overs. They each claimed an lbw to take the total to the innings to five.

In the week, Dulwich were penalised by a twenty one points deduction by the league for fielding two MCC ground staff in the early season games. This fighting performance put the points total back in the black  and will give the team good heart as they travel next week to newly promoted Sunbury in the Shepherd Neame sponsored Surrey Championship Premier League.
