Dulwich First X1

Saturday 17th June 2006:

Dulwich (212 for 9 off 66 overs) lost to Wimbledon (213 for 2 off 37 overs) by 8 wickets

A middle order collapse and another undisciplined bowling performance saw Dulwich slide to a comprehensive eight wicket defeat at Wimbledon.

Dulwich chose to bat and got off to a bad start as Richard Farrow fell in the fourth over with the score on 5.  Phil Chandler then joined Anil Mahey in a stand of 61 for the second wicket, which was broken when Mahey ran himself out for a confident 36.  Chandler fell shortly before lunch for 42, an encouraging return in his first game for two years.  After the interval Sunny Singh and skipper Mark Kelly took the score to 121-3 in the 45th over, but Kelly was narrowly run out for 15 and his dismissal precipitated a collapse in which four wickets fell in 14 balls for only 2 runs.  Dave Burton and Graeme Hough then came together in a stand of 59 for the eighth wicket, in which Hough, with 13 all in singles, played the anchor role as Burton attacked.  Anthony Dalton added 12 at a run a ball, and Burton finished not out on 52 off 59 balls as Dulwich closed on 212-9 off their 66 overs.

Burton struck immediately on reply, dismissing Graham Grace with second ball of the innings.  Richard Pudney then took advantage of some wayward bowling to reach his fifty off only 38 balls as Wimbledon smashed 85 runs off the first eight overs of the innings, bowled by Burton, Paul Towner and skipper Kelly.  These eight overs included 13 no balls and a wide.  Spinners Hough and Dalton exerted some control, but were unable to effect a breakthrough, and the second wicket did not fall until Pudney was caught off Dalton for 108 with the score on 200.  Hampshire opener Michael Brown had given him good support throughout  their 199 run partnership, and finished on 72 not out as Wimbledon secured their eight-wicket victory off only 37 overs, with 20 overs to spare.
