Dulwich 231-8 declared (65 overs) beat Guildford 209 all out (54.3 overs) by 22 runs
A fine all round performance, spearheaded by 83 by Raza Ali Dar and six wickets by Zoheb Sharif, saw Dulwich to a tense 22 run win in their crucial bottom of the table clash at Guildford in the Surrey Championship Premier Division.
Put in to bat, Sharif and Steve Hale comfortably saw off the opening attack of Terry Kalam and Lance Rodrigues, putting on 37 for the first wicket in 15.4 overs. Sharif’s dismissal for 13, bowled by Carman Mapatuna, brought in Chris Thompson who struck the ball cleanly from the start, racing to 43 off 50 balls in a stand of 71 with Hale in 18.4 overs. Thompson fell to Ed Young, who struck again 3 balls later when Hale was brilliantly caught for 44 with the score still on 108. Dar and Richard Farrow saw Dulwich to lunch at 114 for 3 off 37 overs.
Farrow fell soon after the interval for 4 and Dar was then joined by skipper Mark Kelly who made 22 off 33 balls in a stand of 53 which took the score to 185. Dave Burton and Gareth Cornick fell quickly, but Ed Matten then helped Dar add 38 for the 8th wicket. Rodrigues returned to bowl Dar for 83, made off 93 balls and scored out of 119 runs while he was at the wicket. Matten finished 10 not out as Dulwich declared on 231 for 8 off 65 overs. Young took 4 for 74 off 20 overs, and Mapatuna 3 for 70 off 24.
Guildford’s reply got off to a rapid start as they took advantage of a flat track and attacking fields to hit Burton for 48 off five overs, for the loss of Pete Young for 14. Sharif joined Arshad Iftikhar in the attack and together they restored order, but keeper Efren Cruz and Chris Salmons had taken the score to 71 in the 16th over when Cruz was lbw to Iftikhar for 27.
Salmons and Mapatuna added 53 for the 3rd wicket whereupon Sharif captured Mapatuna for 26 and Kalam without scoring, both caught behind, in the same over and followed up by having Salmons caught by Dar for 59. His 4th wicket came at 172, when he had Rodrigues stumped for 16. Julian Hare was joined by Ed Young for a partnership of 17 but Sharif and Dar then cleaned up the tail, with the last 4 wickets falling for 11 runs in 5.4 overs. Hare was last out for 42, off 62 balls, with the score on 209.
Sharif finished with 6 for 71 from 22.3 overs, Dar 2-51 off 15 and Iftikhar 1 for 25 of 10. Young keeper Tom Howe had his best game for the first team, keeping immaculately and taking three catches and a stumping.
The win sets Dulwich up nicely as they entertain mid table Wimbledon next Saturday in the Shepherd Neame sponsored Surrey Championship Premier League.
